I'm not a big gun lover, Paul, but even I think it's a Desert Eagle that is being held in that image.

I am referring to the original drawings from Hergé’s studios, not the image I posted here.

Please stand by…

OK - just dug out a frame I know uses the word “browning” (lower case intentional).

Les 7 Boules de Cristal, page 44:

And the same, but from the English translation:

(and, yes, I have the series in both French and English)

In the French (the original language of the books), Tintin asks for a “browning” - here in lower case, which I expect means that any kind of small arm is referred to as such. In English, we get a more generic term “gun”.

I’m no gun expert - in fact, I have very little internal brain space dedicated to them, so I would not know if the guns depicted are indeed Brownings. However, what I do know is the insane level of detail put into the Tintin books - cars, buildings, planes, everything was meticulously researched. So I would imagine that if Hergé was to draw a Browning, it would definitely be a Browning.

Mark

It is probably a stylised Fabrique Nationale (FN) Browning "High Power". These are made in Belgium and as we all know that TinTIn is the most famous Belgian. Plus he is small so it makes the gun look bigger. No need for him to have a foreign pistol. ;)

Ignorance corrected. ;)

The amount of times I’ve had to pull the BBC up about this kind of thing in the past…

Not according to a Google image search it's not.

Some of the Blake and Mortimer covers are truly excellent.

EP Jacobs was an Hergé collaborator - he drew Tintin stories before he started on Blake and Mortimer. These stories are more wordy than the Tintin books, and I find the French harder to follow. There are English translations coming along slowly, and in the wrong order (why books can’t be translated in the correct order I’ll never know).

Slaine undergoing a warp-spasm. If only Peter Jackson would consider making Slaine into a film instead of The Hobbit.

+1, it would certainly get a lot more interest from me, though don't bet against it if the Conan or Dredd reboots develop legs :)

Apart from the obvious saucy playfulness, what's the gist of that Dredd pic? And the girl at the back appears to have an earring that could be mistaken for something else :?

Is the Batman pic from one of the Dredd crossovers? I think that's the last time I've seen that style...

The Dredd pic is from a really good fanzine I used to read ages ago called Arkensword. When they interviewed an artist, eg Brian Bolland, they'd often get the artist to contribute an original drawing for the cover.

The Batman pic is from Judgement On Gotham (1991), the first Dredd/Batman crossover.

It appears (to me at least) that Haddock is holding an FN Model 1910 (designed by Browning)...

...but hey I don't know better than anybody else
