I like Rise of Nations. Very simple and fun. StarCraft 2 is also very good. Though apparently Civilisation 5 is not so good. Though I could recommend Civilisation 4 is very good.

Agree @ Starcraft 2.

Where'd you hear that about Civ 5? I've only seen/heard nothing but good things about it. /Metacritic - 90% - although surprised about the 1Up score.

+I actually own it and find it rather enjoyable (although it's my first Civ game so i can't really judge).

Well a friend of mine and I have played all of the previous civ games. Civ 2 is very good, as you can customise it. Civ 3 was not so good. He has played Civ 5 for a while now and it does not really grab him like Civ 4. In fact he is still playing Civ 4.

Have you tried Rome Total War??
You can get the anthology for a tenner(of that foreign english money ;) ) Clicky

Or if you can stretch to £19.99 you can download the Total War Battle Pack which includes Rome TW +Barbarian Invasion,Medieval 2 TW + Kingdoms expansion pack 8-) Clicky

Both or these games are very good though i haven't played Kingdoms yet.

yours wecrookie

I have both Civ4 and Civ5. They are quite different games. Civ4 is certainly more depth but has some niggles - religion being one - and having to constantly create transports to move other units over water.

In Civ5 there is no religion and to move units over water you just click on them and then their destination and they change to boats to move on the sea and back to the units again when they land. Civ5 tech tree is a lot smaller though and generally it feels a "dumbed down" version of Civ4. The game is also a resource hog - my PC struggles later in the game on large maps and thats a machine running a GTX 480

On the "Rome Anthology" - I also have that and it can be quite fun but after you have played it for a while it gets a bit just point-click-point-click. The battles are fun though if you fight them in arcade type mode.

Another game I really enjoyed was Grand Ages Rome - good graphics and you have to think about each building type you build or else you can get stuck! Well worth a look.

I found the religion aspect in Civ 4 a pain till I realised the benefits, especially with shrines.

The land units morphing into ships is reminiscent of Rise of Nations, that does the same.

My friend also says that Civ 5 is a resource hog. It crawls on his desktop. That is probably why he is using Civ 4 more. That plus getting used to the new battles with no stacking of units.

I have found that Starcraft needs a meaty machine as well. It crawls on my dual core MBP.

Yes. Or in the case of someone I used to play with - bugging rooms in his house.
