Not sure whether this should go here or AV, so feel free to move. Essentially, my parents are getting a new car, the radio on which has an Aux-in socket. My Dad would quite like DAB, played through the stereo, if possible without replacing the built-in unit. I know there are gizmos that can transmit over FM, such as this, but are they better/worse than anything that (possibly) exists that uses a cable into the stereo. Any thoughts/experiences welcome.

The only thing I know about DAB in cars is that I hear it's not very good at holding a signal. YMMV.

They will be worse, nothing beats a direct connection IMHO

That was my logic. Any suggestions of something that can connect to the Aux-in?

That's quite amusing. One of the design requirements for DAB was that it should roam seamlessly.

I didn't have any real issues driving around with a DAB radio on the passenger seat a while back, although that wasn't over a massive geographical area.

Which is exactly why Alpine stopped making the external decoders for their HUs about 5yrs ago. My HU is a 2005 model and was designed to take a DAB box on a proprietary connector as well as a CD changer (this was before iEverything). When I enquired about it Alpine officially responded saying that the signal strength was too variable on the move.

Bugger! I'd like 1Xtra in the car without the hassle of an extra device (plus the cabling).
