Metcheck (the comedy website for weather information) forecasts +4*C temps, 98% cloud cover and 1.8mm of rain for this morning in sunny Lossie. The actual temperature is -4*C, there are some high Cirrus clouds but it's mainly blue sky and sun. It did snow during the night. For the second year running, teachers from my local primary school have not managed to drive the 5 miles from Elgin to their place of work resulting in closure of the school whilst I have managed to make the journey with no problems and even took my kids into work with me the other day.

The thing that makes this winter difficult for us Scots is the effect the weather has had on the eastern coast and the central belt in particular - all of the main distribution hubs are in Glasgow/Edinburgh and everything has to pass through there for onward delivery plus the system can't cope with backlogs.

My festive delivery of Stilton from my wee sis in Lincolnshire has safely arrived though and is currently residing in the freezer. Christmas will therfore still take place in the Macs household :D (what's the betting it's not a white one though   )

Al

Play.com just rejected my card there, but Visa say it's fine and no payment actually tried to go through... Re-entered some details (they're 'stored' anyway), so gonna go back into my Play account in a bit and see if things are going to plan. Just FYI in case anyone else is having problems...

Tube strike: Drivers vote for Boxing Day walkout

London Underground (LU) drivers have voted to strike on Boxing Day in a row over pay.

The union Aslef said LU was insisting 26 December was a normal working day but the union wants its members to receive additional pay.

It said staff should be compensated for working at "highly unsocial times".

But Transport for London (TfL) said a long-standing agreement covering staff working arrangements on Boxing Day was in place with all trade unions.

Aslef wants triple pay and a day off in lieu for drivers working on 26 December.

According to the union its members voted 9-1 in favour of industrial action which threatens to disrupt travel for football fans and Christmas shoppers.

Aslef general secretary Keith Norman said: "It is painfully obvious to any reasonable person that Boxing Day is not an ordinary working day and therefore it is no surprise that Aslef members have reacted in the way they have."

A TfL spokesman said: "It is disgraceful that Aslef should try to hold Londoners and London Underground to ransom in this way.

"LU has made every effort to resolve this issue with the Aslef leadership, which has refused to attend talks at Acas to discuss its claim for triple time and a day in lieu for its members."

Tube services have been disrupted in recent weeks by a series of strikes in a separate row over jobs.

And it's deja vu all over again:

"Tube drivers, wants triple pay and a day off in lieu for drivers for working on the bank holiday"

Well that would be super, but just to point out that they already have:

"a pay agreement with Tube workers means drivers had 43 days' annual leave which means they have to work some public holidays, including Boxing Day."

I have 20 days annual leave plus 7 compulsory bank holidays. That's 27 days total which is what is required by law. Their 43 days effectively means they're getting 16 days in lieu for the on average 2 bank holidays they work. Does that not sound pretty bloody generous already, or am I missing something?

It would actually be cheaper if they gave them what they wanted, and then slashed their holidays to the normal amount. Except that's probably what they had before they went on strike last year...
