Parliamentary democracy doesn't work IMO. Certainly not ours.

Actually, I think parliamentary democracy works quite well. What's broken about the current system, though, is the party system. Your local elected representative may well have local interests at heart, but they won't be allowed to vote against The Party/The Executive in important things. Party MPs are "whipped" to vote for the governing party, and threatened with being held back or passed over for more important jobs within the government if they do hold to their own ideas.

I really believe the answer is to elect fewer Big Party MPs, and more independents and those of smaller parties. We have one Green Party MP and a sprinkling of independents currently. The rest of the House of Commons is made up of whipping cannon fodder.

The problem with this (as occurs in say the Italian or Israel parliaments) is that small parties with no mandate can end up with excessive power as king makers. They can end up blocking important legislation because it might have a negative impact in their area.

You could say that this is what happens in the US senate so ending up in what is called “Pork Barrel Policies” – i.e. I will vote for (and so pass) this country wide beneficial policy if you invest X million in my area

We need to take the executive out of the legislature, IMO. The "payroll vote" in Parliament is ridiculous, especially considering the incoming reduction in the number of MPs.

Of course that means an end to Parliamentary democracy, but it's probably the best way*

*Unless we can secure a significant reduction in the number of Ministers and Parliamentary Private Secretaries.

In a two party system? No that is just corruption.

You (and I) might call it corruption - they would say it’s working in the best interests of their constituents. e.g. The government says it’s going to relocate a major dept from London to somewhere else with the creation of X thousand jobs in that area. I (As the above politician) just want to make sure that it goes to my area –because
A) I want to help my constituents
B) I want to get re-elected
C) I want to get re-elected
D) I want......

Well moving a government department to a unemployment blackspot is not necessarily corrupt. I do see a point of politicians trying to get money spent in their constituencies but a better way has to be found to do it. So much is actually wasted during the process. In America much was made of the road or bridge to nowhere because it spent money in the state, as stimulus is was good, but no long term practical benefits for the community.

Any that is representative of the people is good. Annual elections will also be good as it can allow the public to get rid of extremist governments before too much damage is done. If we had a election in a few months we could see the end of the coalition as the liberals are decimated and even the Labour suffer for failing to offer solutions.

Annual elections don't offer much in the way of stability or capacity for forward planning...

It can be a bad thing. Look at Switzerland, annual elections and they do well enough.

Good point, well made.

Over here, it's bread and circuses. Keep the plebs fed and distracted, and they won't notice anything amiss until it's too late.
