I don't think there are any members here who were not a part of the old place, are there??

The way I see it, numbers will only fall. I'm quite pleasantly surprised that it's lasted this long to be honest.

Wow!

it's been ages since I looked at the membership. I was expecting maybe a thousand or more by now. Only 548! :(

Almost 300 of those have never made a post. 88 have posted less than 10 times.

I'm very surpised that X404 hasn't done better by now, simply by word of mouth.

Zippy was a new recruit introduced by myself & Redeyes, but neither of them visit much these days.

Part of the problem might be that weird thought of 'Do I really want my offline peeps knowing what I post online?'. I've certainly never told anyone about this place :?

This place is like that very cool underground band you liked before they went mainstream.

All I get from my girlfriend is "You're on 404 AGAIN?"

I was also fearful of making my first post in "the other place". I'm still learning how some things work in this place even now!

+1 to all the comments about a sense of community, you get a great buzz out of x404 that you just don't get with larger forums.

Here's to many more years of boring you all to tears with my inane rubbish. 8-)

I don't think it's a closed space.

Personally, I'd prefer if we had a some more new faces - but a trickle, not a flood. I wouldn't want the site to lose it's feel just because dozens of users arrive and don't take the time to feel their way around a bit.

I haven't really told anyone about the site either, although I do walk around town sporting an X404 T-Shirt occasionally.

I know exactly what you mean - I don't think I'll introduce anyone from "real life" although I can't quite place my finger on why. It's not as if I have some double life going on! :)

Does any one ask about the t-shirt?

I think it would be nice to have a few more regulars, but nothing like the numbers they see on bit-tech.

With facebook now increasingly including work colleagues and parents, it's more and more important to have a slice of the internet where you have some degree of anonimity; a safehouse protecting you from any repercussions. I'm far geekier and frequently moodier on here than I am on Facebook, a psychologist's field day.

Merry Chrimbo, virtual people. :D

I generally refer to this place as "The Forum", the last place held such a title once. I can say to Faye "You know Mark from The Forums?", and she knows who I mean after I say "You know, Weebl...".

PCPro/etc., had the whole news/magazine thing going on, it lead new users onto the forum, x404 doesn't really have the same gravitas. While the other place could be seen as the main camping area, x404 is that special clearing you stumble upon and can't find again for a while....

I to have told few people about this place, only because they wouldn't be interested or because I want to keep it to myself. I've posted here pretty regularly for the last year and a half (or so?) and can see me continuing for the foreseeable future.
The community here is very welcoming, and I love it. My only wish is that there was a few more people who were computer geeks as I feel a little overrun by photography people....But that's not necessarily a bad thing
