Insurance companies are now not allowed to charge premiums for winter tyres (previously classed as a modification). Have a look on the BBC.

To a point, it's even worse than that though. If you were to get a new set of rims, so you didn't have to keep changing the rubber over, that's a modification you have to inform your insurer of (and will put your insurance up as they are aftermarket alloy/steel changes) Same as tyres that are a different size to the stock ones And the load/speed rating (as many winter tyres don't go up to the 130+mph many summer tyres are rated for)

^^^Not all insurers will charge.
I'm with a specialist insurance company and there's no premium loading for "safety" (handling) mods (eg suspension, brakes etc).
It's worth having a spare set of rims for winter tyres and may be even worth looking for scuffed/kebed alloys that are the same as yours to put the winter tyres on.

True, but the vast majority will for young drivers The wheels don't have to be the same, just manufacturer rated, so if it's easier to find skinny tyres that are at the manufacturer rating there is no loss in running those (for instance I can run 225 16"s or something like 195 15"s and the 195's are a fair bit cheaper)

My tyres are rated for 180mph and about a tonne more than my car is allowed to carry...

Nope. Just expensive. £125 a corner for me. Nokian WRG2s and Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes are just two that will do what Dave is talking about.

As was mentioned elsewhere, there's about one tyre that fits my rims (to manufacturer spec) so I'd imagine getting winter tyres on the car will involve shipping them in from Europe, and a second set of rims. PITA, and pricey to boot.

Ah, the joys of owning a car you've always wanted.

I very much doubt any European car manufacturer would be stupid enough to design a car with small circumference, wide wheels, that wear huge tyres

I've got pretty sick if this winter tyre [LIFTED] if I'm honest. Great luxury to have, but hardly practical. Last three days have been back to the customary 10 degrees here now.

I'm with you on that - Scotland, yes, it'd make sense. South coast? Maybe not so much.

No. I've seen enough weather recently not to want to watch more on the telly.
