I wanted to physically assault the manager at Toys R Us. I know it's wrong but what a freaking retard.

We bought Emily a Tomy Deluxe Den (or something!) for Xmas and it was broken out of the box. We went back to the store Monday and asked for them to swap it. They didn't have any and wouldnt be getting them for weeks so we asked for the money back and we'd buy it elsewhere. They wouldnt do that though as we didn't have a receipt.

Then it started...

We had a bank statement as a proof of purchase. Their own policies (and I'm pretty sure the law) say this is fine i.e. you need the receipt or alternative proof of purchase. But as the bank statement shows "Toys R Us" and not "Tomy Play Den Thingy" he said he couldnt do it. Well the question then is what CAN be used as an alternative proof of purchase?

The second sticking point was that the total on the statement was £55 and the den cost £40. We explained we bought other items that day. He said we cannot prove we bought that item from there. Well why would we take it back there? It's faulty. We're not blagging anything because we dont like it. We'd take it back to the store we bought it from regardless.

Following that he said if we could show the items added up to the statement he'd rethink it. So I added up the den, the soft dog and some maracas. It was a penny different. He used this as 'proof' we didnt buy it there. I asked what the selling price of the item was when we bought it in October (18th) and he said "I can tell you what we sell it for now". What a cock. When he finally looked it up he said (with a cocks attitude) "well actually the price changed in October so I can't proce how much you paid". I asked when in October and he said "19th". I asked how much and he said "1p". Arrrrrrrrrrgghhhhhhh. When I pointed this out to him (and I was being a proper bastard at this point) he said "no you bought it in November, the statement says so". THE STATEMENT IS NOVEMBER STATEMENT SPANNING FROM OCT-NOV. COOOOOOOOCK!

Ok to cut the story down....

Then he wanted to refuse the refund on the basis that we "might have bought it on a 3 for 2 offer". When I asked if this item was on 3 for 2 in October he just blankly stared at me.

The he offered a credit note only. Again, the product isnt going to be in stock for weeks.

Then he (after sending me away) was going to do the refund for Nic but asked for proof of address (I dont believe he has any right to do this but we just wanted to get it done). Only she hasnt changed the address on her driving license yet so was going to refuse again.

Needless to say I'm never shopping at Toys R Us again. We have previously spent a LOT of money there having had a new baby but I'm done now. They can get [LIFTED]!

I'd definitely devote a considerable part of my day to trying to get him fired.

Yep

Back when I worked at Comet people used to whine about being asked for their details to go on their receipt, funnily enough the same people that had broken items & had lost their receipt, not such a silly thing to do now is it? (I know I had to use it when I was in Reading and my old Samsung NV8 camera broke, into the shop, straight to the customer service desk, 5 minutes and it was all wrapped up and away for repair/replacement)

No shop has to give you a receipt so a bank statement is legally sufficient. I'd be tempted to put in a formal complaint that he is clearly incompetent by going off the date on the statement not the transaction.

If possible could you try a different Toys R Us store?

I went in to a store today to exchange something. Had no receipt, statement or even a store bag, I pulled it straight out of my backpack.

No problem, swapped on the spot. :)

For the first time in over a quarter of a century I'm the owner of a dressing gown.

That can often be the case, but the simple life is so much easier to get at if you keep the receipts.

Cool. I have one but don't wear the things so my wife has started using it (probably because she bought it) as hers got a bit small for her

Oh the shame of having an AA van on the drive. Stupid dead battery. Still I suppose 110k miles is okay for a life span.

I'm wearing one now. I'm working from home for various reasons, including an unpleasant tummy bug.

I really do need a nice warm pair of slippers though. I want pink fluffy ones with ears, but I need them in size 12...
