Consumers could see lower retail prices for LCD screens and other electronics after the EU agreed to scrap a set of tariffs.

The EU's decision should come into effect by the end of June, and follows a long-running dispute involving a tariff against Taiwanese, Japanese and American manufacturers of LCD monitors, set-top boxes and multi-function printers.

The three countries had gone to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) claiming the tariffs – of between 6% and 14% - were unfair. The EU has now chosen not to contend the issue further.

The WTO had urged the EU to drop the tariffs last year, but setting a date to drop the duty means price reductions are finally on the cards.

“As prices in general are going down anyway it will be hard to say which of the factors had influenced the prices most, nonetheless I expect the decrease to be accelerated,” Miroslav Sykora, a senior analyst at IDC, told PC Pro. “It's a bit premature to state exact projections of its real effect on prices.”

Well prices are falling anyway. Tech prices fall steadily. So I doubt that the public even noticed the fines in the prices of their TV's. It might be good to wait to see what the effect will be on screen prices will be.

It'll probably offset the VAT increase by the time it gets to retail. So we won't see any difference at all.

Exactly. Or by the time they are in the shops the price will have fallen even more.
