Quote:
Senior officers have called for armed transport police to be able to patrol the UK's railway network.

British Transport Police (BTP) Chief Constable Andrew Trotter has asked the government to amend the 1968 Firearms Act to allow the move.

He told ministers the terror security threat was likely to remain at the "severe" level until the 2012 Olympics.

Wow the commuter trains from Guildford must be hell. What about Chatham? ;)

In related news the Brazilian Foreign Office advises against non-essential travel to the UK.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

If they are given the power for the olympics I cannot see those powers being withdrawn. Then what about all London coppers? They will demand the same rights to arm. I am against this. Armed response vehicles are sufficient.

When my brother was working for the MOD police they'd just gone to the armoury to collect their weapons when they got a call to assist the British Transport police with an incident on a train (I think people were walking through the train mugging people as they went).

The muggers got the shock of their life when instead of a couple of British Transport police with whistles they got 6 fully armed officers boarding the train to make the arrest.

Calling in support is perfectly adequate when necessary.

I think you will find that most officers are against being armed on a routine basis.

I support them in that.

+1. IMO there is no need to arm every bobby either in London or across the UK. Also IMO it will only serve to increase the presence of illegal weapons on the street.

They're actually some of the worst I've had the joy of travelling on.
