I know that in the good old days (of a few months ago) most netbooks were being released with linux installed on them. Now, most seem to have wretched windows, which is no good.

So which netbooks are well supported by linux? Are there any bits of hardware commonly used in netbooks which aren't very well supported??

Hmm, that page is putting me off. In particular phrases like ...

Every single item in the "tier one" section has sometime that doesn't work except for five, and of those five only one is said to work "out of the box!". :o

Well it works perfectly on my Eee PC 1000, though I don't use it to record sound, so...

Cool. :)

I'm planning to buy one this summer for use at uni in October so I'll keep an eye on that list. Thanks for posting.

In all honesty I'd buy one with XP and install Ubuntu onto it rather than buy one that comes with linux preinstalled - they invariably have better specifications than the linux versions - Windows needs more RAM and takes up more space, so they give them bigger hard drives and more RAM. The Dell netbook comes with either Ubuntu or XP - buy it with XP and reformat it. The two issues are wifi on channels 12 and 13 - not usually a problem, just set your router to channel 1-10. The other is pulse audio - but that is buggy anyway, just uninstall it and use ALSA instead.

Just don't buy the HP netbook with Suse installed - it confused the hell out of me and I use linux! I feel sorry for the newbies who bought one!

Unless of course you want an SSD, which has its advantages. It doesn't exactly cost a lot to bung an extra gig. of RAM in a netbook either.

It's actually a damned fine machine; it's just SLED is possibly the worst possible choice of OS that anyone could have dreamed of. Mine is running XP now, but a lot of people are happily using a different build of Linux on it.

Ironically, SLED as supplied didn't support half the hardware...

That's what I meant - it's an awful combination. A different OS and it's probably great.
