Sounds like Google are putting up more of a walled garden than they used to. Taken from here. http://www.geekwithlaptop.com/google-ad ... -app-salesIs it any more open to chuck out bad apps before they go in than it is to chuck them out after?

To be fair, it needs it (from Daring Fireball) Also to be fair there is a fair amount of 'passing off' on the Apple App store and Apple has proved to consistently do bugger all about it, telling developers if they think someone else on the app store is infringing their copyright it's up to the developers to take them to court. Good luck with that if you're in Wisconsin and the guys ripping off your app are in China. However Android has never actually been truly 'open' - it (as in both the market and the use of the OS) is unregulated but large parts of the OS on any given functional device remain copyright to Google and/or the handset makers. Android has never been truly open... It certainly doesn't play nice in terms of open source. The source code is closed off, until they make an official release, other programmers can't contribute fixes or extensions to the Android source tree and generally aren't welcome to fiddle with Android, which is a major point of open source. This isn't to say, that anybody can make any changes they want to an open source project - they can, but they can't automatically post the changes back into the main source code tree, they have to submit their changes to the controllers of the project at first, until they build up a reputation and can then book their own changes into the source code tree. With Android, Google don't allow this, there is no way to gain access to the development code and no way to gain reputation to book your own changes into the source code tree.

Do you think that Google have certain plans for Android which allowing others code to be added could change or reveal their own plans?

Considering you can install apps from 3rd party sources/it will always be 'open', they are removing those that violate the ToS on the marketplace. There is a big difference (as Google don't vouch for any 3rd party apps or marketplaces)

I guess that is a key difference. If you can install anything you like onto an Android device with Google's blessing then that is pretty open. It is just the Marketplace that is getting less open. Still a slippery slope some would say. CC

The drug dealing app I'm playing is terrible, it keeps crashing. Sort it out Google and get the apps tested and stable before launch

Just got Crazy Snowboarding for Android. Not bad so far, but complicated controls.
