Quote:
Nick Clegg has warned Oxford and Cambridge universities that it is "not up to them" to decide whether they can charge fees of up to £9,000 a year.

The deputy prime minister said they had to "dramatically increase" access for poorer students, after Cambridge said it could demand this amount.

From 2012, English university fees will be between £6,000 and £9,000 a year.

Of all the universities Oxbridge are the two that could justify it. Also if as a politician you leave this fee level in do not be surprised when universities use it.

improve access... code for let the bugger in because they are from a poor background not because they are the best or have the ability.
Then watch the poor sod struggle because they dont have the same grounding in the subject as others before they drop out.

I am all for only the brightest getting in. I do not think that being PC will benefit them if they are loaded up with debt when they leave. If there only merit gets access then the fees start point can be set much higher, for applicants families.

What did he expect? With all universities being able to charge £9k now, anyone with half a brain could have guessed that the best two in the country would be the first to charge the full amount.

Yes and these two are the only two who could justify it. Still not right.

I fail to see how someone in the Government, and the Cabinet can attack the results of the very policies that he helped put in place. I see no differentiation between the Lib Dems and the Conservatives right now. They are, quite literally, “all in it together”.

If he really doesn’t like it, then he knows what to do: apologise and resign.
