Here in the Batcave I'm working on a business magazine for the north west, and we are desperately in need of some cool images of Manchester - particularly the regeneration that's going on all over the place. The images will illustrate a three-page article on some surveys that have found Manchester and surrounding areas are nice places to live, have excellent transport and are well-placed to take advantage when the recession ends.

The brief is we're looking for artfully composed high resolution images of buildings, skylines, public art, transport infrastructure, etc. In fact, almost anything that really shows what a fab place Manchester is in 2009.

We can't offer any money - which is partly why we're not leaping off to iStockphoto and just downloading from there - but we'll happily give a big credit/links to your photos in the publication and buy you a pint if we meet up at some point in the future!

I need high res images by first thing Tuesday at latest, so that gives you a weekend to play. You can contact me through this forum - I'm here most of the time, sadly, or you can email me at the works addy: studio [at] mandmkent [dot] co [dot] uk.

Thank you ever so, ta muchly!

Hi Heather,

Have you been given any specific places to get photo's of, as there is a lot of regeneration work going on in Manchester.

Either way, I'll be more than happy to go and take some pictures, (I'll be using the wifes 12 Megapixel Kodak Digital thingy) over the weekend, and can give you a shout sometime on Sunday.

:)

We're looking for architectural chiefly - trying to show modern and happening. If that makes sense.

We'll probably need three to five images in total, but obviously the more the merrier.

As an example, here's a local lad's Flickr pics:

We don't need the HDR so much, as the interesting angles on buildings and sights and so on.

Thanks, John.

My brain is now officially working and ideas are beginning to emerge. I am actually quite looking forward to this challenge!

One question... what do you mean by HDR?

High Dynamic Range - it's where people monkey with the image to make it look sh!te, essentially.

Seriously looking forward to the results of your expedition now. I can't tell you how much we appreciate it.

Ohhhh. That's ok, my pictures won't need any "monkeying" to make them look sh!te, honest! ;)
Only kidding, they'll be great! :)

Yeah you can... don't be shy! :P

OK, seriously now. I've asked at work to get some more inspiritation, (I meant to type inspiration, but got carried away and thought that it looked like a cool word, so didn't bother correcting it) and one of the guys has emailed me a link to a site with some good pictures*. I can't get the link yet, as he sent it to my home account, but I am going to do some serious travelling this weekend!

*edit to add: Giving me inspiration for places to visit, not pictures to nick!

Heather,

I work at the University and they've thrown up quite a few new buildings recently. I could nip out and take a few snaps if you like. I've got a 7MP point & click with me right now or I could bring in my DSLR (10MP Sony job) tomorrow/Monday. Useful?

Yes, please.

As I say, we can't offer payment, but full credit will be given in the publication.

Cheers

Are we talking mainly city centre shots, or surrounding areas too - Manchester covers quite a lot of areas. Not sure if I'll have the time, but I might be popping into city centre this weekend, so will take my camera and see if anything jumps out at me!

Are you looking for finished buildings, or shots of "work in progress" - there's still plenty of cranes about (despite the credit crunch). Also, are you looking for commercial (shops, offices), residential (flats, town houses) or leisure developments (bars, restaurants etc), or a mixture of all the above?

Sorry heather but HDR isnt sh!te when done properly. This months PP mag has a really good example on the contributions page.

I posted a couple of very amateurish examples in the random thread......

If anyone wants to know more there's a wiki here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging The new york at night example here is fairly stunning.

That would be cool!

I'd prefer completed buildings where possible, but I'm also interested in unusual angles, abstracted architectural details, reflections in glass. We're trying to be a bit quirky and arty-farty with the look of the magazine. I'm also after a city skyline which emphasises the high-rise developments that have been going on, as well as those classic shots down by the canal under the railway bridges.

That's about the only brief I can realistically come up with, so apologies for that folks. As I'm sure you're aware, if I lived a bit closer, I'd be straight in the city shooting the stuff myself! :geek:

I know. It's just most of the stuff that gets shown about is way overdone in my opinion. It's like the photographer was desperately trying to salvage a rubbish photo or something. ;)

My efforts are HERE - bear in mind I'm no professional photographer and these were taken with just a compact camera (Canon PowerShot A640 - 10MP). I just basically ran around town and shot them dead quickly - cos if I hadn't I'd have fried in the blazing sunshine yesterday, just my luck for it to be the hottest day of the year! Plus, I was going to get up early in the morning when the light was better, but I overslept so these were taken at about midday (I know, not the most ideal time!).

Heather, if you want any of these as full resolution just let me know and I'll get them to you somehow.
Cheers,
Steve

Gopt some shots of the approach at Picadilly station and Ancoats, both of which have seen some regeneration in recent times.

I'm going into town at lunchtime and will get some more, (obviously I'll have to take at least one of the big wheel) and Mrs. V. pointed out some places this morneing on the way into work, which I'll get on the way home.

I'll upload them a.s.a.p. and drop you a line.

:)

Cheers John!

If you can get them uploaded quickly, that would be fab! The client has moved the goalposts a bit and we're trying to clear things up today if we can.
