'Supergran' to auction handbag

This brave lady, and I use those words very deliberately, is apparently going to auction the said handbag and donate the proceeds to charity.

Surely I'm not the only one who thinks that maybe the proprietor of the Jewellers could and should match any amount raised to add to the total for her chosen charity....... and possibly also slip a "few bob" her way as a personal thank you too.

We need more public spirited people like Ann Timson !

Was this the lady who approached some lads who were trying to break into a shop and beat them with her handbag until they legged it?

I think that it was simply amazing, but we could just as easily have been reading about her being stabbed or gunned down. The fact that one elderly lady can stand up to and route a gang of six thieves just shows what we as a nation could achieve if we all stood shoulder to shoulder against crime, rather than standing back.

I think the sad point is that we, as a nation, have come to accept that standing by and doing nothing is the correct thing to do.

This isn't helped of course by stories of PCSO's, paramedics and normal police officers holding off "until back up arrives" whilst incidents like this happen.

I refer to a recent incident where a paramedic was called to an incident where a person had been taken ill inside a pub/club (in this case I hasten to add that it was reported that the paramedic was instructed not to enter the pub alone), the incident where a young boy drowned while pcso's stood by waiting for "a water rescue team" rather than entering a pond to attempt a rescue or perhaps most pathetically pcso's "not trained for crossing the road" thereby stopping some schoolkids from attending church.

I'm somewhat surprised Ms Timson wasn't taken aside and warned by police about her future behavior !

Cynical ???? Me ?????

Me too.... in the local swimming pool dressed in pj's when I was about 12.

If I recall correctly the incident I referred to involved a young boy or about 11 and 2 or maybe 3 pcso's who didn't see fit to enter the water to try and attempt a rescue. Still...... you can't be too careful can you and of course rules is rules !

I know of the story of the paramedic who didn't go into the public house. We are often told not to enter places like that without backup, but tbh, the Welsh Ambulance Service tries to avoid sending lone workers into difficult situations like this- if the paramedic is not sent then there is no question of him/her being left to make the decision about when to approach.

It's easy to assume that everyone would be pleased to see a paramedic and be helpful- both by acts and omissions- but it sadly isn't always like that. Last year, I attended a hanging and whilst purposely striding over uneven ground and still donning my gloves, I was told to "Run, you effing tw*t." Had it been anything other than a cardiac arrest, I would have turned around and left the scene.

Not all of us are too hindered by rules to do something in difficult circumstances, and I would like to direct your attention to this story about a colleague and I hope I can say friend of mine.

http://www.denbighshirevisitor.com/news ... -24808919/

The one thing that I would like everyone to consider when they do criticise others for NOT doing something is that training for specialists, or awareness education for those who are not specialists, will highlight dangers that lay people may never consider- For example, did you know that you can be knocked off your feet and be swept away by water that is only ankle deep?

Anyway, some people must have thought that Mark did the right thing-

Assume all you like, but the "nation" is more likely to be that of the United Kingdom. We're still one nation, despite devolution. Until you get your independence, you'll have to put up with it. :P ;)

trigen_killer....

I think you and I are saying exactly the same thing but coming at it from different perspectives. Mark Timmins apparently did exactly what Ann Timson did. Saw an incident where he knew he had to act and acted. He didn't wait to consider whether he was correctly trained, suitably insured or following rules. He saw a situation that needed attention and acted. He's a brave man and I salute him.

Yes.... I have heard stories about paramedics, police and fire fighters coming under attack, verbal and/or physical, when attending incidents. It's wrong ! My point is that it's seen by some as acceptable and that shouldn't be the case; just as those pcso's should have attempted to rescue the young lad. Until we deal correctly with those who hinder, abuse or attack those who are in the frontline in our emergency services then I can only see this situation continuing.

I just want to add that I'd be proud to count Mark Timmins as a colleague and even prouder to call him a friend !

What, all of them? I thought it was a handful of baggage handlers. Most of whom then said 'Nah, wisnae me, it wis yer man Smeato' to the press.
