PlayStation 4 isn't even on the agenda behind closed doors at Sony right now, according to the head of the firm's games business.

Kaz Hirai told PC Impress Watch (via Eurogamer) that Sony hasn't even started debating a PS3 successor yet.

"As regards home consoles, the PS3 was put into business in 2006, and it has a ten year life cycle," said Hirai.

"This means that we aren't even at the halfway point. There are certainly many more desirable first and third party titles coming out. As we announce and implement new initiatives on an annual basis, I still believe in the importance of improving the software and feature set of the PS3.

"I think the value of the PS3 will continue to rise," he added. "Because of this, a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now. That is to say, we are still concentrating fully upon the PS3. Right now, I appeal to you to think of the PS3 and NGP as a new, co-operative partnership."

Sony Computer Entertainment US boss Jack Tretton said on the same subject last year: "A question I often get is when we are going to see PlayStation 4. When somebody can craft the technology that exceeds what we're able to do on the PS3, but we are still just starting to harness it."

Yesterday, it was reported that a PlayStation certified tablet is on the way.

I predict idiotic statements around the time of release and a laughable price

Sony started mumblings about a PS3 fairly shortly after the PS2 was released. I do remember the PS2 being advertised quite heavily.

Good. I've only had my PS3 for a year, I don't want to go buying a new one just yet. :D

The PS3 is an great platform. I’m enjoying mine, and don’t want to give it up right now (mine’s a first gen one too). It does PVR duties, plays BluRays as well as lets me do gaming. The iPlayer on it is far better than the one on the Virgin Media box too. I feel it has many years of life in it yet.

Maybe I'm way off base, but I think the longer people are coding for Cell, the better they'll get at it.
It's always struck me as a chip that's not quite fulfilled it's potential, just yet.

How crap is the VM version then? :o

I mean don't get me wrong, I love having the PS3 iPlayer at all, it's just the fact that I often have to refresh the page to make it functional that grates...

My PS3's become a bit of a glorified DVD player - in the respect that's all I seem to be using it for these days.

I'm starting to think I'll miss out on the PS4 and just stick with PC gaming instead.

I use mine more for the browser and iPlayer these days, though that's cos games can take up so much time these days (for me anyway).

I think it'll be the last system I own; Sony's arrogance and lack of direction sometimes is just mind-boggling, M$ and me don't get on, Nintendo's far too gimmicky, and me and my mates aren't getting any younger

I was reading an article just yesterday claiming that GT5 and Uncharted have maxed out the chip.

Hmm... Eurogamer's technical bod (the 'digital foundry' section) has just published an analysis of Killzone 3, and a quote from the devs of that game suggests even now they haven't actually got all the various processor's running at near 100%, even though it's doing stuff no other game on the 360 or PS3 is doing yet.

It may very well possibly be the case that it's effectively impossible to get every bit of the PS3 running at full speed - there may be bottlenecks in the system that stop that happening for example or it may just be too difficult to figure out how - but I don't think we're quite there yet. I suspect we aren't quite there yet with the 360 either mind.

It takes ages to load. I can make a cup of tea waiting for it start up - the PS3 is pretty instant. I find the playback quality on the PS3 better. Virgin’s iPlayer controls let you skip 10 minutes in either direction - no finer spooling control available.

Really? My VM box also let's me fast-forward through programs at 2x or 10x (I think) speed. :?

It doesnt matter how well people learn to code for the Cell though IMO it will always be dragged back by the relatively poor (by PC standards) GPU+RAM combo
