I believe that your logic is flawed, as you can choose not to choose a religion, but, (if you decide to use a computer) you MUST have an OS. </pedant>

So, I decided to start again today Just done a reinstall from the CD. I've been messing around a bit more than usual and managed to get either mine or my computer's wires crossed. I'm almost certain I had 2 versions of Apache on there pointing to different locations. Anyway, going to do it all again properly this time

OK, so in 40 minutes I've installed Apache, PHP, MySQL, phpmyadmin and it's all up and running!
And I think I only wrote about 7 or 8 command line entries, LOL!

Not bad at all - considering you were deploying some proper tech. How bad did you stuff it then?

Much as I love ubuntu, I thought you had a mac? Mamp would have been easier.

I do have a Mac but it's still running MacOSX.
I also have a PC that I have had for 3 years but barely use it so I've installed it onto there.
I don't think I stuffed it too badly but I was getting confused as to where things were and what they were doing.

Mamp's just so damn easy. Not as much of a challenge though, so I can see the appeal of sorting out a separate box.

Much as I love people running Linux, it does seem a touch overkill to run a separate box. From hereWorth a try?

Def worth a try.
I put it on a separate box as I don't like dual boot.
Having a lamp virtual server would be ideal!

But MAMP sits on your existing OS X install. And I thought that Apache should run 100% the same no matter what OS it is sitting on?

Mamp's an app - doesn't run until you launch it and automatically launches its admin pages in your browser when you click on it. Just put localhost in your browser to look at the site. It really is amazing as a dev tool. Only issue is when you've built your site, you have to change all your code for the new passwords/locations. I assumed you knew about it when I posted or I would have given more explanation.

Ah, what I meant was... I put [the install of Ubuntu and the rest of the LAMP server stuff] on a separate box as I didn't want to dual boot Ubuntu with MacOSX. TBH I was expecting MAMP to run as a virtual server but as it is I like it. Makes it very easy to manage permissions etc...

I see, I thought you were nearly looking for Apache, MySQL, and PHP. If you wanted Ubuntu too then I see your point You've got a fairly decent MBP, have you not? Have you considered VirtualBox as a way of running Ubuntu? Separate boxes are very nice I'll agree, but VM's can be equally if not more flexible...
