German efficiency. It's like the Loch Ness Monster - oft touted, never seen. Mrs. B. needs to apply for a new (German) passport. This will entail at least 2 trips for both of us to the embassy in London, inordinate wodges of paperwork and at least 9 months of waiting. Great

That's not Teutonic efficiency, it's the other thing they're famed for. Precise paper work. Hope it's sorted soon though.

Why not go to Germany for a little trip, it'd probably be quicker. Seriously. When my GF's passport was due to expire we just did it in Finland at the Police Station and she picked it up at the airport. I'm sure Germany could be just as efficient.

oft means "often" in german, most commonly used probably in 1945 when all the german woman said to other german "wie oft?" (how often?) as in asking the other how often or times they got raped by russian soldiers occupying berlin

Nope. Not allowed - she's de-registered as a German resident.

Tonight's meal, which is currently having its molecules agitated in the oven.

Eh? How do they work? She's still a German citizen, seems a bit bizarre.

Laundry. Everything else - socks/jocks/trousers I have fresh ones but I'm outta shirts. Strangely I have no compulsion to take them to the washing machine downstairs.

You're only allowed to apply in the country/geographical area where you are resident. Southern Britain = London, Northern Britain = Edinburgh. You can apply via a local honorary consulate (e.g. Liverpool, Plymouth) but all they do is post your application to the relevant embassy. Meanwhile, Mrs. B. called the Name Change office today only to learn that their office hours are 1030 - 1230. Useless twunts.

It's the same with my GF and her Finnish passport, but that's when in the UK. In Finland, as a Finnish citizen (who are subject to the same laws as the rest of Europe) she can apply and pick one up in her home country. I can't believe for one second that if someone returns to their home (European) country they will be told 'oh no, you have to apply in the foreign country where you live', that would just be nonsense.
