Really? So you never say 'ye ken'?

Where do you think 'ken' comes from?

My brain keeps trying to convince me I'm hungry, when all I really am is bored

Have a drink of something. That usually stops me from thinking I'm hungry, unless I really am hungry, in which case it doesn't help at all and I have to get something to eat.

I'm only after having John Dory chips and I gave a load of those away as I was full, so it's definitely the boredom. Drink choices are fizzy pop and ridiculously priced water, since H+S won't allow us a kettle :x

Sh!t mate, hope they're ok. My friends moved out to NZ a couple of months ago with their wee kiddy, thankfully for them to the North Island, but it's worrying.

TBH wearing gloves isn't mandatory - it's meant to protect you from needle stick injuries more than anything else. I tend not to wear gloves either unless cannulating. In fact, most phlebotomists don't even bother with the alcohol wipe because of lack of evidence for it.

Cannulation on the other hand has a high risk of thrombophlebitis and given it's something that stays in for up to 72 hours, has a high risk of infection. Consequently you're now meant to use sterile packs and wear gloves when doing this procedure. Having said that, I have on occasion taken off the gloves if it's a particularly difficult patient (ie poor veins).

Best Beloved is Type 2 diabetic. When he went for a pre-op checkup when he had his cataracts sorted out, his blood sugar came out too high. Turns out the alcohol wipe was skewing the result, not helped by the MRSA handwash stuff...

Blood sugars are different and the machines are more sensitive given the tiny amount of blood used. Having said that, you still have to make sure the skin is clean. Venous blood samples will be far more accurate as they aren't skewed by tiny traces of sugar on the skin.

ken is a word based on the norweigan "kjenner" and the german word "kennen"? meaning "understand/know

but up this part of scotland people tend to say "kain" or ken't slang of a slang

Is that no evidence for alcohol wipes working to kill bacteria, or alcohol wipes working to stop the injection site from becoming infected? Personally I can't see how sicking a sterile needle into your arm is going to cause infection.

I remember discussing this in A Level English, way back in the mists of time (or about 25 years ago), and the teacher had researched this. He claimed it originated from the Viking use of the word "kna" for "know".
