That is assuming the battery works efficiently at lower temperatures. Most batteries have an optimal temperature working range.

IIRC, the Tesla uses a heater system to maintain the batteries operating temperature.

If I had to have an electric car, I'd have one of these http://www.lightningcarcompany.co.uk/.
Saw it at the motor show in '08, and it's gorgeous. Not a hint of false piety.

Actually, yes. If I had a huge pot of cash, I’d probably want one too.

Hydrogen, though, is the way to go, I feel. I remember James May on Top Gear saying that electric cars require a different mental attitude, and as discussed here, new infrastructure. He said that we already know how to handle hydrogen as it’s used in much the same way as petrol.

I think Hydrogen's the best bet - if only we could cheaply harness what's lying around the place we'd be sorted.

jonbwfc I was behind her in a queue today - but I wouldn't describe it as 'bushy'.

Two distinct differences:

a) electricity can be generated cleanly, it just isn't currently
b) The emissions from cars isn't the only thing to worry about with petrol & diesel, there's also the inherent risks of drilling etc.

If we could generate electricity cleanly, my vote would be for using the power to split water into hydrogen and oxygen and using that. Sounds a bit weird rather than using the electricity directly, but until we've got mr fusions on the back of our cars, I think electric cars are a lame duck.

Whatever the solution is, I reckon it will be vastly different to anything we're thinking of now.

According to futures past, we're all using moving pavements and jet packs.

They would still drill as hydrocarbons are used for many many other things.
