I never realised how much the blast fallout had actually affected Europe, bar my own guessing

This is only just making the news?!? People have been shouting about this for at least a decade.

The real tragedy is that we've just had the most prosperous decade in British history when we could have solved many problems such as this. What did we buy instead? A tent in Greenwich and a footbridge that couldn't stand the vibrations of feet.

We are right proper geniuses aren't we eh? :x

Indeed. There was a really good documentary on it last year.

Oh but it won't have had any affect on us whatsoever. Really, none....

New roofs are normally the territory of church fairs and cake sales. Make up your own jokes here.

One of my friends was working at a nuclear power station in Wales when Chernobyl happened. He said that they knew something was up when people going into the radioactive controlled area were setting off the detectors on the way in (they are there to stop activity being taken out the area) because they'd walked in from the car park and there was enough activity on the soles of their shoes to trigger the monitors.

I love the way the Finnish government know about the explosion before the Soviet government.

I've heard similar stories regarding some people who lived in (I think) Cornwall. The natural radon produced by the granite in their homes made them radioactive enough to set off the alarms going in to a nuclear establishment.

These homes now have extractor fans to reduce the build up of radioactive gases.

The Soviets knew perfectly well what had happened. They were just unwilling to admit to the rest of the world that it had happened in a bizarre attempt to save face. Radiation has little respect for political embarrassment however.

From what I've read the Soviet government had only been told that there had been a fire, not an explosion. It was only after the Finns announced the readiation they'd detected, did the KGB get sent in to find out the details.
