Pretty much. Less than a year, certainly. April 10th 2010. You should've seen the marketing manager's face when I told him the new one was coming out - he's had his for about 3 months.

And just in case the thinner, lighter, faster with a fancy new cover doesn't impress, the original iPad's have had a price cut, now down to £329 - linky - probably just 'whilst stock lasts' but even so might be worth a punt for anyone who's not sure a tablet's right for them; almost certainly a better bet than spending £299 on a 10" Archos, unless you absolutely have to have Android and all that 'openness', of course. First UK shipments of iPad1 were delivered on May 27th last year btw

I think our MD will want one. Though he does keep asking about the iPhone 5
I like the smart covers. That's a nice touch. I'd like to know how much RAM it has, just out of interest. Bit disappointed about the screen resolution. They could have upped it slightly.

From a dev's point of view that'd be a complete bugger. iOS UIs tend to rely on the fact that you have a known screen size, and the only way they could rely upgrade phones to the retina display was because it was a simple doubling. At present you potentially have to produce 3 UIs - iPhone, iPhone Retina & iPad - if you produce a universal binary. This is already non-ideal and most people produce an iPhone and iPad UI, and leave it at that. Taking full advantage of a HD iPad screen could well be a substantial amount of development work.
