Having said that I've been doing support/techy roles in one form or another for.. somewhere around 25 years now and I absolutely swear there are certain people who can crash anything. It doesn't matter what the hardware is, it doesn't what the OS is, you give a computer to some people and it just. stops. working. I've seen it. I've seen otherwise perfectly adequate, intelligent people sit in front of a computer that was previously working fine and within 5 minutes it's started to go haywire. Some people are just gifted that way and I don't think there's a computer yet built on earth that can withstand them. I just hope to God they never let one of them go into space....

I think I'm one of 'em, I've elicited quite a few 'It's never done that before's...

And possibly related, kids are excellent at that too

We have a new starter a little like that. She's just soooo impatient. The worst thing is, she'll say "I know I'm impatient and I shouldn't do this" and then goes click-mad anyway when all she had to do was wait a moment.

Keeping IE open for over a week with dozens of Flash games doesn't exactly help matters either. Installed memory = 1GB, used memory = 2.5GB mostly by Facebook. I'm thinking of installing 64 bit browsers where possible, see if that helps the matter :?

I think on some days we can just give off whack electricity.

Some days every piece of electrical hardware I go near just has a panic attack and goes mental.

jonbwfc I was behind her in a queue today - but I wouldn't describe it as 'bushy'.

Hmm, OS X is turning into Windows!

Why?

1. OS X Lion is reintroducing the Windows Program Manager, which Microsoft dropped in 1994.

2. Yvonne's Mac mini stopped printing, the network stack wasn't working. After trying several attempts, I used the Windows stand-by, restart the computer and the network stack was working again and it was printing...

I've crashed every mac I've ever used. I've even somehow managed to bugger up my ipod nano.
Hence I'm not convinced macs are as stable as people say they are.

I wasn't being entirely serious, as it appears Bobdobbs appreciated...

I did :D

My sytem crashes normally when I have been buggering around with it, so I know whats caused it.. me  (though the last incident was as far as Im concerned Grubs fault and it deciding a MBR wasnt a good thing to have and not to do with me accidently chucking out my live cd, so repairing the damage wasnt as straightforward as it should of been  ).
Though my brother, even though he has an electronic engineering degree and could be classed as intelligent has this inate knack of doing the wrong thing on a computer but not knowing what hes done.

When I visited Cape Canaveral recently, one of the places I looked round is the NASA Hall of Fame & Museum. There, they have various bits of astronaut kit from the various US space programs. I was marvelling at the fact the early astronauts seem to have done into space in little more than a wetsuit when I came across the section for space shuttle memorabilia. Now, on the Space Shuttle they have these specially designed hardened laptop computers. They look a bit like an old thinkpad but they're not a standard windows or mac laptop. They're running a custom OS with very specific applications on top. Like the rest of the space shuttle, they've been meticulously engineered and tested and retested to within an inch of their lives.

The example unit in the museum has the following sticker still on it...

I havent owned a Mac so could not comment on how reliable they are but what I find when it comes to PCs is it tends to be the owners who [LIFTED] them up.

For example I'm still running XP 32bit and I dont have any problems with it at all. I dont particularily do anything to maintain it other than Ccleaner once in a while but I am careful about what I install on it and run.

Now take my Dad. He's got a Vista machine and it's knackered. Not because of Vista mind you. It's because when IE launches so do FOUR toolbars (Google, Yahoo and some others) and he wonders why it's slow. Then there's god knows what apps, add-ons and programs he's let install from the Internet. Then to top it off there's his general ignorance when it comes to IT. Add to that the grandkids games, messy file system, etc etc.

I know Vista wasnt exactly the best OS MS ever produced but how does it stand a chance with a user/owner like that?
