It's all over Twitter, too, if you feel brave enough to hunt the idiots down. There's been a lot of sensible people I follow who've been tutting over it.

OMFG, they actually mean it...

"Googl Pearl Habor death toll" FFS! Do any of them know nuking them killed getting on for a quarter of a million people? Mind you it doesn't sound like they know anything of history not that that's even relevant.

What a bunch of twats. Glad I'm not on twitter, I just hope there're some Americans on there balancing out the opinion put forward by the redneck halfwits.

Edit: Saying that, in other situations I'm sure halfwitted Brits could come up with similar crap.

theyre just sheep, whos to say who attacked first anyway? theres apparent reports of USA provoking the japanese into attacking them but it doesnt sound credible (to me) due to what japan did to china in 1933? I think,

Difficult to separate the trolls from the genuinely ignorant.

It's irrelevant. It was nearly seventy sodding years ago, virtually everybody involved in either the bombing of Pearl Harbour or the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is long dead. Anybody who thinks it's got anything to do with current events is an utter twat.

Interactive satellite photos before/after tsunami.

Use the sliders in between each pair of photos to show/hide damage.

Yes and thousands are missing. I wonder how much worse it could have been in a third world country.

A video of the impact of the tsunami on a town. At first it looks minor then just keeps coming until you see whole buildings disappear.

You're not wrong, it just seems relentless... Just glad to see no people getting swept away.

Second explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12729138

That one looks more worrying than the first, as there are clearly large lumps of debris thrown high into the air.

It's also uses MOX fuel unlike the first.

Quote:
Technicians are battling to stabilise a third reactor at a quake-stricken Japanese nuclear plant, which has been rocked by a second blast in three days.

The fuel rods inside reactor 2 at the Fukushima Daiichi plant have been fully exposed on two separate occasions, raising fears of a meltdown.

Seawater is being pumped into reactor to try to stop the rods overheating.

A cooling system breakdown preceded explosions at the plant's reactor 3 on Monday and reactor 1 on Saturday.

The latest hydrogen blast injured 11 people, one of them seriously. It was felt 40km (25 miles) away and sent a huge column of smoke into the air.

The outer building around the reactor was largely destroyed.

But as with the first explosion, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) said the thick containment walls shielding the reactor cores remained intact. It also said radiation levels outside were still within legal limits.

Now, I'm not familiar with the design of Nuclear Power Plants, but the two underlined comments seem contradictory to me. :?

I think by exposed they are talking about the fuel elements being open to air rather than water, but still sealed within the reactor vessel.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I saw a quick diagram on Channel 4 which helped explain it to me.

The reactor is a huge steel drum (it looks a bit like the hot water storage tank in your house) and it's built inside a huge concrete building.

Inside the drum the reactor rods are positioned vertically and used to heat water inside the drum. (Again a bit like a hot water storage heater thingy).

The reactor rods are normally fully submerged in water and the level of the water is adjusted to control the heat of the rods and the rate of decay. (If they are too hot they add more water, if they are too cool the take the water out).

When they say they have been fully exposed they mean the rods have been completely out of the water. This is bad because they will be heating the gas inside the tank to very high levels and thus increasing the pressure inside the tank.

However, the second bit means that so far the steel drum has remained in tact and so has contained the radiation as much as possible.
