'Don't panic': Obama calls for calm as terrified Americans panic-buy anti-radiation drugs and Geiger counters over nuclear fall-out fears.

Quote:
Nukepills.com sells 250,000 potassium iodide pills while Anbex gets three orders a MINUTE instead of per week

Packs of 14 pills that usually cost $9.99 changing hands on Amazon.com and eBay for $250 to $400

Geigercounters.com begs people not to place any more orders after it sells out of radiation detection gadgets.

Quote:
Real-time radiation map of U.S. shows levels are currently within normal ranges

:o NO! Really?

More here.

Why wasn't a failsafe built in from scratch that if the power failed overall then the control rods would be automatically released so that they fall into the reactor shutting it off.

This is exactly what did work.

The problem is that once the control rods are in there, there is still an issue of residual heat from the decay of the other elements (iodine, caesium, etc...)

They have to cool the rods with water until the residual decay and heat has dissipated. The part that failed was the electirc water pump, and the back up diesel water pump and the back up of the back up diesel water pump.

It's that heat of decay which the bloke on the wireless said was dissipated purely by passive convection in modern designs. He was supposed to be an expert, so I believed him.

Very possible. These are quite old reactors though...

clicky
LA TImes reports power has been restored to the facility as a whole, however some of the main cooling systems have been damaged beyond repair by the various catastrophes they have undergone and the reactors are effectively now on life support - the only cooling they are getting is what's been brought in as emergency measures.

Other reports suggest extra staff have been allowed to return to the plants to deal with the current state of the reactors. The problems now appear to be the spent fuel pools - apparently water levels in the pools at Daiishi 2, 3 and 4 are dangerously low and spent fuel rods have been exposed to the air, leading to serious (but localised) radiation leaks.

Sir John Beddington, the UK's chief scientific officer, is quoted as saying,
Quote:
So what I would really re-emphasise is that this is very problematic for the area and the immediate vicinity and one has to have concerns for the people working there. Beyond that 20km or 30km kilometres, it's really not an issue for health.

Again, the information being published seems at times contradictory and uncorroborated. The Chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Greg Jaczko particularly seems to have spent most of the day telling a US congressional committee things I find it very hard to believe he knows to be fact. He seems to be erring on the absolute worst case scenario, probably to cover his own back.

Fingers crossed this putative follow up quake doesn't happen then.

It's been continuously active for some time. I worry it's only a lull before a repeat storm.

Time to get the Thorium reactor systems worked out, really, isn't it?

Years ago I saw a diagram in the Times, i think, about a prototype that was supposed to be being built. Cheap, relatively clean as it's pretty easy to get a hold of, no possibility of meltdown, no possiblilty of making weapons grade material and a way to dispose of radioactive waste.

Would have thought more progress would have been made by now.

Reading from wiki it say that 1 ton of Thorium contains the equivalent amount of energy as 200 tons of uranium and 3.5 million tons of fossil fuels.

There have been prototypes built but nothing more (again according to wiki).

I imagine that the road blocks are all political.

Is anyone else reminded of the nuclear storyline in The West Wing (Episode 144 "Duck and Cover")?

Possibly too many vested interests to overcome. The Saudis would privately threaten things if governments make serious efforts to get off oil.

Excellent, in 6 months time there will be a glut of particle detectors going for a song on eBay.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
