http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-12767850And if your parents are really rich they pay upfront and you do not have to pay a penny back.

And all the Unis so far are coming out saying they'll charge the max £9k...
The tories have been putting through so many ill thought out half baked nonsensical ideas it's beyond unbelievable.
As for the LibDems, they set themselves high ideals but when power came knocking they've proven to be just like the rest. They've lost my vote, and I'm sure that of many others, for the foreseeable future.

Yeah.. I could understand Oxbridge doing it but when Exeter Uni said they were going to charge 9 grand, I did have to laugh. Thought this was the last lot's idea? Mind you, the current ones still pushed through with it so nobody's blameless. last bi-election seemed to suggest the truth of this. They're going to get battered in the council elections coming up soon. Jon

Having been a student at Exeter and knowing a reasonable amount about the VC, I'm not terribly surprised...

You are right that not one party except possibly the Monster Raving Loony Party come out of this with any credit.

Aye. I'd have thought the more popular unis could charge more but the less popular ones should be charging less to draw attention and more students. I'm not sure those figures are accurate but I've got a cold and am feeling a little delirious.

I'm sure that's what Tory Boy was thinking. What he failed to account for was that removing virtually all central government tuition funding as an austerity measure would leave most universities massively in the red, so they have to overcharge to attempt to break even. Basically, it's yet another illustration of how massively clueless the Tory party leadership are about the real world. At the mo, the more they look like a 'worst possible case', the more likely they are to be accurate. HE has been utterly hurled over a cliff by this government. In related news, I may well possibly go on strike on Tuesday for the first time in my entire life. To put it bluntly, my future elderly self is being robbed blind to pay for the mistakes of a bunch of M5-driving hooray henrys who wouldn't know risk management if you hit them round the face with a cricket bat with 'risk management' written on it. In all likelihood it won't make a jot of difference but as the guy says "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything". Jon

This is going to sound really morbid, but I have a plan to help my son out when he goes to uni. My nan is almost 90 now. In a few years when the inevitable happens, I'll put any money she leaves me into a savings account. I'll not spend any of it, then use it to pay my son's fees if he goes to uni. That way his debt won't be quite as crippling as it would other wise have been. I'd hate to think he'd be crippled with debt all his life.

That sounds eminently sensible. He could get through with no debt and no deductions for decades. Unless of course the government come up with another wheeze.

Isn't that just perpetuating the thought that everyone should go to university?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

This does depend on what the kid wants to study. It might not even happen. Though I do agree with you on the perpetuating the fantasy that a degree is everything. Degrees actually can be a serious hindrance in some areas.

Some should and if he doesn't end up being one of them, he'll have a nice nest egg. The deposit for a house maybe.
