Apple says it has bowed to public outcry and removed a controversial program – dubbed the “gay cure” app – from its App Store.

The app had been available for more than a month, and was given a 4+ age rating, meaning Apple originally thought it contained nothing offensive.

However, gay rights campaigners and the wider public said the app “encouraged people to change their sexuality" and 150,000 people signed up to an online petition organised by Truth Wins Out and calling for the "hateful and bigoted" app to be pulled.

And the protest worked. "We removed the Exodus International app from the App Store because it violates our developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people," Apple said in a statement sent to PC Pro.

The app was published by the outspoken religious group Exodus International and the app further the group’s ideal of a “Reparative therapy ... addressing unwanted same-sex attraction.”

That's, like, totally gay...

How the blazes is that offensive to other (gay) people? By extension, apps that help track weightloss are offensive to fat people and should be banned too.

One the same basis that being gay can be cured. Which I seriously doubt as it is a response to genetics and chemical balances during pregnancy and talking to some religious nut will unlikely change that.

It may be futile, but I still don't see how anyone can possibly take such efforts to be offensive.

I suppose it would be as offensive as some one saying that you can change that even if it is impossible. As an amnesiac I have had comments like if it was important enough I would remember something. That winds me up because it does not work like that. So if I were gay and someone say that I could be cured it would be thought of as offensive at the very least. As I am not gay I would think that gay people are the best ones to answer this.

Erm... I'm not sure that's been proven

I accept that no single cause has been proven.

wikipedia wrote:
Biology and sexual orientation is the subject of research into the role of biology in the development of human sexual orientation. No simple, single cause for sexual orientation has been conclusively demonstrated, but research suggests that it is by a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental influences,[1] with biological factors involving a complex interplay of genetic factors and the early uterine environment.[2] Biological factors which may be related to the development of a heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual or asexual orientation include genes, prenatal hormones, and brain structure.

Firstly, you can choose to lose weight, you can't necessarily choose not to be gay.

Secondly, there are proven individual and medical interventions for losing weight; I am not familiar with any medically-approved procedure for becoming "straight".
