This a nonsense.
Customers in a restaurant don't need tablets. A thin client on each table using a time sharing system to a central server would be more than adequate.

Much better idea to provide a web-based menu, which punters can access via their smartphone/tablet if they wished.

Might be too complex and open to problems like customers changing initial orders.

Still better than clients walking out with the menu system when they leave.

Yes but they could be grabbed off customers before they eat?

Nah, they'd be handed out, then you would order and the waiter would come and collect them. Still get the face time of the waiter so you wouldn't feel you were being palmed off with a cheap alternative.

What a waste of time & money that is though. Ok, in theory, if you're redoing the menu every day it saves you on printing costs. Other than that, you're spending 500 quid a pop on something that's serving exactly the same function as a piece of paper. You can get an awful lot of menus printed for 500 quid, let alone 500 quid times the number of menus you'll actually need simultaneously.

Restaurants don't need a lot of things, like music playing in the toilets. I'm sure a big, fancy restaurant could afford to replace menus with tablets purely for the novelty.

Go even more retro and have a chalk board or a simple menu.

Or just have the server recite the menu...

32GB wi-fi only.
You should be able to personal hot-spot your phone for 3G connection.

Not at £15 a month for O2's tethering plan.

Although a mi-fi or similar would work for the few times I need internet on it

Same here. I would imagine that the times I would want it tethered will be low single digits so I would opt for a per day tariff and only when necessary, i would like the option to use an iPhone details with a iPad on a wifi network.
