Been asked by a friend about the DVDs of the Star Trek films. This set on Amazon looks like a stalward buy:

However, said friend is a purist. He wants the original cuts of the movies as originally released. Each film has since been re-edited, and in the case of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, had extra footage inserted (quite poorly too in places), and new GCI for the effects. The question is, if anyone has this set, are there the original versions of the films supplied, or just the newer cuts?

The first one was great, especially since I'm a non-Trekie, so I'm looking forward to this

I liked the last Trek film - Trek had become lumbering and ponderous, and was sombohged down with "canon" that it was getting harder to do annoying new. The film successfully captured the freshness of the original series without being a carbon copy of it. I am looking forward to the second one very much.

I was going to say that the new box sets of the original TV series have been remastered and the spaceship sequences are much better as a result. As for the original question I think it has been remastered. Though this looks untouched.

Klingons And Khan Namechecked By Team Abrams In Upcoming SFX Article!!

The next “Star Trek” movie is about 21.5 months from warping into cinemas, and New Pike, Bruce Greenwood, recently allowed there seemed to be a plan to start shooting in January. We don’t even know who’s directing, or what the title is, but J.J. Abrams is producing and the same fellows who wrote the last “Trek” will be back.

And Team Bad Robot must be closing in on some sort of story by now, yes?

TrekMovie got hold of upcoming SFX Magazine interviews with Abrams and the writers, and began reading tea leaves. There appears to be little more in the article than a whole lot of “maybe we will and maybe we won’t,” but it is slightly interesting that Alex Kurtzman is still namechecking Khan Noonien Singh after all these months and Roberto Orci references the enduring appeal of the Klingon.

The two excerpts:

Kurtzman: Starting at a premise of what you want to see and then working a story around it is not how we do it. You have to start with what is the right story. And that if you can say "That’s a story that Khan fits into", that’s how you get to that. Not deciding on a menu list of items and then seeing if you can’t string them all together.

Orci: Introducing a new villain in the sequel is tempting because we now have this incredible new sandbox to play in. On the other hand, some fans really want to see Klingons and it’s hard not to listen to that. The trick is not to do something that’s been seen before just because you think it will be a short cut to likeability.

Nobody ever mentions Sargon or Ruk. We ALMOST got a Victor Garber Klingon in the last movie. I guess we're all just growing fatigued as we await details.

Star Trek 2 writer offers update on the sequel

Roberto Orci says fan input is important

Star Trek 2 writer Roberto Orci has spoken out about working on the sci-fi sequel, revealing that the first draft of the script is complete.

Talking at WonderCon, he also stated that both he and his co-writer Alex Kurtzman value fan input – and that some of their comments could help shape the sequel’s script.

“Everyone said [Kirk] is too young to become Captain,” Orci says, “So maybe in the next movie, somebody goes, ‘Man, you sure became Captain young and fast.’ You start to incorporate people's opinions...

“If it's organic to the story and you find someone who doesn't think too highly of Kirk because he maybe skipped a few steps, that's maybe a fun thing to consider. That comes from a fan reaction and maybe gives you a story point.”

Hinting that production on the follow-up could kick off this autumn, Orci teased about what we should expect from the film.

“[Fans] wanted more character time with everybody,” he says, “and, because that was an origin story for Star Trek, everyone had to come in at a certain point.

“Now everyone is going to be there from the beginning, so they're going to get that. Everyone sure hated engineering. They thought it looked like a brewery, which it was. I'll pass that on to J.J. [Abrams] and see what he says.”

Finally, Orci revealed that he’s happier with the process behind the sequel than he was on the first 2009 Star Trek.

“We'll be working and tweaking that story through shooting,” he reveals, “This time we don't have a strike, so we'll actually be able to change things on the set.

"On the last movie, we handed in the script and that was it. You couldn't change a word. This one feels like we've got all the time in the world.”
