Quote:
Three-quarters of mobile phone subscribers are wasting an average of nearly £200 a year because they are on the wrong contract, research suggests.

People over-estimating how many minutes they would spend on the phone was the main reason, with most using just a quarter of their monthly allowance.

Researchers concluded that the UK's mobile phone users were wasting nearly £5bn a year on misjudged contracts.

Some people pay more per month as it means they pay less for their phone at the start of the contract.
Often the total cost over the life of the contract isn't that different.

I put £5 on mine the year before last. Still got about £3 on

Obviously, I don't use it much. I have free off-peak calls on my land-line and free mobile data from, so my mobile is only for rare occasions when I'm stuck out and about and need to contact someone who's not on MSN. I think the last call was probably for a cab.

I reckon I'm on just over £2 a month.

Last bill from 3, for my '£12 a month' contract was £25.
For this reason, I'm talking myself into iPhone territory.

Just one more year and I can move back on to a SIM only contract.
I have no intention of replacing my current phone.

I have to "top up" every month to keep the iPone web bolt-on going. Based on my usage pattern, it may be cheaper for me to buy a MiFi box and use that instead.

I am going to replace mine this year but I have had it for 7 years, which is pretty unheard of. I will get a contract that will probably cost me more than I need but since the phone is being subsidised it makes sense for this one year.

I think the EU mandated that they had to offer a one year contract recently. I was planning to go with Tesco who have a one year contract anyway. After that first year I will drop it to a PAYG contract if necessary.

True. But the phone will cost a lot more if you want a high end one.

An iPhone 5 is going to cost above £600 anyway. The call bundles can bring that upfront cost down a lot.
