If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Doing the Practical Photography "Boot Camp" this year. Homework 1 is to use exposure compensation so they suggest a dark object/white background or vice versa. I took this under the lounge lights (no flash) against a white sheet and dialed in +1EV (corrected white balance in RAW editor but nothing else)

[50mm, f/2.8, ISO100, 1.3sec, +1EV]

It's fun when you learn how to do stuff in camera, is it not?

Nice shot. I couldn't see what the object was at first, but then realised it was candles.

It is. To be honest it looks like a fairly basic course but it will at least force me to get the camera out once a month and practice a technique or two. I dont think I've used exposure compensation since doing my Sister's wedding a few years ago!

What I was most suprised about doing this is just how clean I could get the background without fancy lighting setups. It was taken under horrible energy saving bulbs which are pants at the best of times. When doing Emily's christening poses

I spent ages getting the light right with a couple of flashguns, etc*

*in fairness I couldnt have used a 1 second exposure with a wriggling baby though!!

Needs a wash. There's horrible dirt on the registration plate.

Useful for speed cameras though.
