Quote:
Online music service Spotify is halving the amount of free music that users can listen to.

Current users of its free service will be limited to 10 hours per month, half the time currently offered.

New users will only be able to listen to individual tracks five times per month when the new version of the service goes live in May.

The news has angered fans who accuse the firm of seeking to change its model from free to paid.

I wonder how many people with free accounts actually use more than 10 hours anyway??

I would imagine that it's not all that many.

I'm still on the old free account. No limits for me (but I do get ads)

I read this which annoyed me:

Bye bye Spotify. Seems like I have to resort to piracy now, as I do barely have any money for my bills.

It's just so wrong.

Aha, I wondered why I wasn't running out of listening time*

I can't imagine this will do either Spotify or the industry much good in the long run...

* It's probably the same with Grooveshark now that I think of it.

Does that mean you only have 10 hrs / month (or 20 mins / day) that you can listen to the "Radio"

Now I am a Radio 4 guy amd that can be on, esp over the weekends, for 5 - 6 hrs / day - come to think of it just the monring alarm means the radio is on for at least an hour a day

i used to use Imeem.com to listen to music, it's much like spotify but they cut back on music available due to legal reasons i think and then went under and were taken over by MySpace, so its crap now :P

seems to be the trend with every "free" music streaming site, they are dying

I was planning on using it to find albums listening to them and then ordering the CD. If the music business were involved in this decision it will hurt them ultimately as people will probably not hear music as much and so will buy less.

*I apologise if linking to one’s own blogs etc. is regarded as spam. If it is, let me know, ta.

They were buying more before Spotify launched. Music sales have fallen since.

I think that the global recession had a big impact in that respect. Though the big CD buyers are the baby boomers and they are starting to die off, or are getting seriously sqeezed financially.
