TBH I like the sound of one aspect of the Icelandic system - if Parliament approves something but the President doesn't sign off on it, then the matter goes to a referendum.
I have a huge amount of respect for Her Majesty, but the rest of them can sod off. Republic now!

Our constitutional monarchy really precludes her from blocking such legislation. We would need a president for that, but considering how such candidates would be picked I have no faith in it working here.

I might not agree with him, but I like the fact Charles isn't afraid to air his opinions and push for what he believes in.
If nothing else, the mainstream press usually do a better job of keeping the royals in check than they've ever done with our politicians, and it's obvious who wields more influence when comparing the two.

I suspect a lot of people once the Queen dies and we have the prospect of Chrlie on the throne. Though if he abdicated and let William have the throne, teh monarchy might stay popular.

The people governing the people, how quaint. Let them eat wedding cake.

You could argue that is the strength of having our constitutional monarchy, no need to be popular just do the job asked. Im not a massive fan of having a monarchy but IMHO its still a lot better than the other possibilities <shudders at the thought of president Blair>

I suspect that Charlie will become neutral as the post requires. You will not hear any comments about things like now.

Presidential races are almost always decided based on either who's the richest, who they're connected to or the looks of the contestants.
President Putin anybody?
