Samsung to sell HDD unit to Seagate in $1.4bn deal

Boo! I do hope this doesn't mean that the SpinPoint line either disappears or goes up on price to make Seagate drives look more competitive.
By the end of the year your hard disc choices could be down to Seagate, Western Digital and Toshiba. How long until they start to hoover up the smaller SSD manufacturers as well?

Yeah, saw this on Bit-tech - not good news IMO.

I've never liked Seagate drives, they were always noisy and flakey.

I just hope that they adopt some of Sansung's production processes, but that might be unlikely as Samsung are losing money on their HDDs.

It is the constant merging of companies to reduce competition that is not good. Long term hard drives might be on the way out but that could be decades.
