My overall thoughts on the episode are mixed.

I really liked the "main story" part as it was a return to normal "Who" form.

However i wasn't impressed with the opening... yes it was clever in an "i expected that, didn't expect that and should have expected that" sort of way. But i really don't like it when they present to you a cliffhanger at the beginning and then don't resolve it over the course of the episode. It better be resolved in the second part or i'll be even more annoyed.

I do like the new enemies though, very creepy but i hope that the mechanics of them don't get in the way too often or else it would just be frustrating.

You need to be looking at the series in more than just episodic stories. Just like the last series, there is a story that sons al 13 episodes, and it seems that this series references the last one too. I would not be surprised if there isn't a story for this generation of The Doctor and it won't fully conclude until he regenerates.

Moffat is playing long game here.

I don't mind continuity over and throughout a series with regards to plotlines (in fact i generally prefer episodic series' with an overarching plotline as opposed to a more story based series - why i couldn't get into BSG), it's just that i think this takes it a step too far.

You're right in that the last season was similar, except that the last season was episodic from the get go and had little hints and tidbits throughout the season which then "culminated" (sort of) with final two episodes. However this season effectively starts off with a massive spoiler (which isn't even properly addressed) and then goes back to its normal format, which is why i stated i disliked only the beginning.

It's sort of similar to Columbo which i've watched on occasion. Giving away "whodunnit" at the start is rather counter intuitive and it only works since it's wrapped up in the course of a single episode. If i have to watch an entire season just to make sense of the beginning i'd be rather pissed off, especially since this season is apparently split into two parts.

There is one big plot hole.

The Doctor has regenerated 11 times in 900 years, but in the last 200 years of his life he manages to avoid regeneration even once- Has he just been on his hols?

We've seen this with River not realising that they haven't met before. We have only seen her once with David Tennant (iirc), and yet she expected him to know who she was.

And can someone please tell me, why the [LIFTED] is the Doctor not still in an impregnable prison with the Universe collapsing around him?!?!?!?!?!?!

As noted, I can't be doing with wondering WTF is going on throughout an entire series. And as for my kids; they have no idea what's going on in a single episode sometimes, never mind trying to follow a complex plot throughout an entire series.

However, liking the 'new' Doctor, still. Is anyone going to get him a fez?

Most likely, i did think about this, maybe he's just more careful and less reckless .



There are probably a number of events that happened which we simply weren't told about, it's similar to how when River and the Doctor get together they synchronise diaries by naming events we've neither heard of before, or seen.



Some form of pre-destination paradox he created. (He was set free by his future self, who in turn had been set free by his future self etc. etc.).



I do like they've made it a more intellectual show and not just some normal "kid's" show but at the same time i can see how it can be frustrating for younger viewers since they're going to struggle to understand the more complicated elements.

On a complete side note:

Since this season is supposed to wrap up the issue of River Song... i remember the Father from the Angel episodes referenced her as "Who or What she is" implying that she might not be human.

Also with the focus on the "Silence" as the new enemy i was wondering whether or not the two could be related somehow.

This would also make the episode where she "passes on" possibly more significant since the title of that episode was "Silence in the Library", now obviously this could refer to the fact that the Library was silent and empty, but could it also be a double entendre with regards to River being in the library? I guess i'll have to see.

On a Saturday night, they could dumb it down considerably and it wouldn't have much competition in the intellectual stakes. Did anyone see Sing if you Can? WTF???

Did you see Don't Scare the Hare then? Gawd that was awful. Saturday evening TV is clearly for cretins. Doctor Who is the only reason for the telly to be on at that time.

Doctor Who needs to be clever and well written. That's the bloody point of it.

I'm not criticising Doctor Who by comparing it to Sing if you Can. I'm just commenting that compared to some Saturday night entertainment it has a long way to go before it was as intellectually challenging as some of the TV fare. And yes, I did see a couple of minutes of Don't Scare the Hare.

But even I am wondering what the hell is going on- this story and the whole affair. The previous series may have had stories running through them- Bad Wolf, the tear in space and time etc. but I've always had some idea what's going on during each episode. Now my mind is boggled by the whole state of affairs.

I suppose that what's different is that we have a strange new enemy and no idea what they're capable of, but it is also bugging me that they left one hell of a cliffhanger at the end of the last series and now it looks as though we are going to have to wait even longer to find out what the heck is going on. Haven't we waited long enough?

The writers don't have to keep us hanging on to keep us coming back. I love the program.
