Reader poll Well, the time has come to vote for the best sci-fi movie never made from the list of 50 heavyweight contenders nominated by you, our beloved readers.

Quote:
Before getting down to it, we'd like to point out that we're fully aware a couple of the nominees are already "in development", but until we see the results projected onto a really big screen, we consider them fair game.

On a personal note, I'd like to kick off the inevitable protests about what's not on the list by saying I find it quite remarkable that Sam Slade: Robo-Hunter didn't get a single nod from you lot – now that would make a great CGI robot romp.

I'm sure, though, we can all agree on a couple of things: that whichever title wins the day, it should not be approached to within several light-years by Michael Bay; and if Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan appear, they should merely maintain a decorative silence and get blown out of an airlock at the earliest opportunity.

I've been pondering this list for some time. Simon Aughton (smithsocksimon) pointed me towards it and it's bloody hard to say which of these is 'best'.

Hmmm....Stainless Steel Rat, I'd say. I read the E.E.' Doc' Smith books when I was at school (initially because of the Foss cover art) but they'd be too childish for modern audiences. Having said that... ;)

The two Alfred Bester books would possibly work well too. I agree with the comment that Robo-Hunter could make a good movie, as could Halo Jones.

Many of the others I simply haven't read.

The Chronicles of Amber – Roger Zelazny
for me. I love that set of books, I even played the roleplaying game. :geek:

Now isn't that a coincidence.....

Just this last week in the glorious sunshine we have had I (re)read both Tiger Tiger and The Demolished Man.

Now I have to dig out my 35 yr old copy of A Canticle for Leibowitz and that will do me nicely for the coming long weekend :D

I might also just get round to replacing at last my (soon to be) 9 yr old Evesham pc !!

That's the point. Many sci-fi movies already made have been based on books, so this list is the books that have not yet been made into movies.

I think... :?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I think the most awesomest sci-fi movie never made is this:

Quote:
Hopefully people will write stores about killer robots from space, the middle of the Earth. Or both.

Killer robots from space AND the centre of the Earth fighting it out for control of our planet with Big Lasers.
^Epic & awesome

EDIT:
It could look like this:

As found here: viewtopic.php?f=35&t=10889&p=161322&hilit=writes#p161212

Quite why Spielberg, Jackson, Cameron or any of the rest haven’t dropped me a line about this yet is beyond me. I’d even entertain it being a Dr Who episode at this point, I’ve been waiting that long.

Having had a look through the list I voted for Night's Dawn by Peter Hamilton. That was an easy choice for me but there are still a few names there that deserve a feature film; Niven, Heinlein and Banks for starters. Another good thing is that it has brought to my attention a series of books that I have not read and can probably assume from being on the list that they are worthy.

One major concern is that the story could well be ruined. Night's Dawn is so big that only something on the scale of Jackson's LOTR could do it justice.

Asimov's Foundation trilogy would be difficult to make into a film, I think.

The story arc covers seven books, and at least three different periods in history over several tens of thousands of years. To make it fit a movie format would inevitably involve a major compromise or several.

That said, Foundation was dramatised by BBC Radio back in the late 1970s. Let us not forget that Lord of the Rings was always deemed to be unfilmable, and that more or less worked out okay (though the story arc in LotR is much shorter by comparison).

Personally, I'd love to see Foundation as a film, but as it hasn't happened yet I doubt it will happen at all.

(I've only read three of the books, and that was complex enough!)

The work 'puter flagged this thread as obscene and offensive.
I guess it's the mention of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.

Anyway, best Sci-Fi movie never made?
Firefly Season 2. Or 3, depending if you count Serenity (which I don't) dee-yadda-di-yada.
