Quite a lot of current accounts now have credit check systems as an optional extra. Alternatively, you can get one from www.creditexpert.co.uk or a couple of other places, although you'll have to sign up for their 'credit activity alert' services (which cost money) to get a full one. You can take out a 30 day trial and, provided you remember to cancel before the 30 days are up, it will end up costing you nothing.

Aye - I signed up to credit expert a while back but then cancelled it soon after. Now it won't let me back in and I hate having to ring people whilst at work.

I've gone through the statements for both credit and debit cards in the past six months and I cannot find any payment info. Does anyone know what it should say on the statement ie name of company? I know I paid for first strike but can't find the info. Highly stressful as I'm trying to revise and exams are a week away!

With the playstation network, you should have got two emails, to the email address your PSN master account is registered against, from DoNotReply@ac.playstation.net. One with the subject 'PlayStation(R)Network Wallet Funding' when the money is taken from your bank account/CC and added to your PSN wallet, and one with the subject 'PlayStation(R)Network Purchase Confirmation' when you used that to pay for something.

When I last added some funds to my PSN wallet via a card, it showed up on the CC statement as a payment to 'SONY ONLINE SERVICES INTERNET GB'.

Thanks. Tried to search for it via iPhone but it couldn't find any. Turns out I'd saved the emails into a folder.

Turns out it's my debit card account. Thankfully I've got two accounts with the same bank so can transfer the money out into the other one and then leave it until next week, when I can cancel the card and get another one. Frustratingly, I've had this card for only a few months (just before First Strike came out).

I've also deleted every email in that email account - 1000+ that I'd saved.

:(

That's a bit extreme. Did you use the same password as your PSN account for the email account? You should at least have copied the emails down to a local folder or a different email account first.

As in the other thread, a bit stressed and thought fudge it. I tried looking for it but not focussed enough.

TBH there was a core of maybe 50 emails that were important. Several hundred related to online activity (used it for every website, forum and program that requested an email address), I used it for my ebay accounts - more to do with saving my purchases so I can see what I bought from whom should I ever want to buy anything further from that seller. It also used to be linked to my paypal account until I decided it probably wasn't a good idea to have the paypal and ebay accounts linked to the same email address, so had some paypal history. A lot of them were private messages that had been saved from the forums I visited - it acted as a backup, so I could keep the private messages folder on various accounts within the limits.

Anyway, I've saved details of the forums that it is linked to and will keep an eye on things. If there's anything dodgy, I'll shut down the account and link them to a new email address.

The password for PSN is completely different to any password for anything else. In fact, the only passwords I "share" are the ones for online forums because I can't be arsed to think up of a new password every time I join one, especially since I don't visit the majority frequently.

EDIT: In fact, I'd recently slung a new HDD into the PSN, had forgotten my PSN password and changed it to a new one.

I've had my cards used fraudulently so many times, what's one more going to hurt? Just seems to be fact of life these days.

I wonder if the other 77 million Sony users agree with you? ;)

Sony sued over PSN data breach

The inevitable has happened; and American PSN user has jumped at the chance to sue Sony over the leaking of PSN users' personal data following hacker attacks last week.

The lawsuit was filed at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on behalf of a Kristopher Johns, 36, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Johns accuses Sony of not taking "reasonable care to protect, encrypt, and secure the private and sensitive data of its users."

Johns' also complains that Sony took too long to inform users of the security breach, preventing users from being about to "to make an informed decision as to whether to change credit card numbers, close the exposed accounts, check their credit reports, or take other mitigating actions."

He's seeking monetary compensation, of course, as well as free credit card monitoring.

Sony pulled the plug on PSN last week after discovering a major security breach and informed customers yesterday that their personal information likely including credit card numbers had been compromised by hackers.

CVG's often amongst the first with the news, but their articles and set-up could do with a bit more care

Q&A #1 for PlayStation Network and Qriocity Services

+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

First off, we want to again thank you for your patience. We know that the PlayStation Network and Qriocity outage has been frustrating for you. We know you are upset, and so we are taking steps to make our services safer and more secure than ever before. We sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern this outage has caused, and rest assured that we’re going to get the services back online as quickly as we can.

We received a number of questions and comments yesterday and early today relating to the criminal intrusion into our network. We’d like to address some of the most common questions today.

We are also going to continue to post updates to this blog with any additional information and insight that we can over the next few days.

We are reading your comments. We are listening to your suggestions. Please keep them coming.

Thank you.

Q: Are you working with law enforcement on this matter?
A: Yes, we are currently working with law enforcement on this matter as well as a recognized technology security firm to conduct a complete investigation. This malicious attack against our system and against our customers is a criminal act and we are proceeding aggressively to find those responsible.

Q: Was my personal data encrypted?
A: All of the data was protected, and access was restricted both physically and through the perimeter and security of the network. The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack.

Q: Was my credit card data taken?
A: While all credit card information stored in our systems is encrypted and there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained. Keep in mind, however that your credit card security code (sometimes called a CVC or CSC number) has not been obtained because we never requested it from anyone who has joined the PlayStation Network or Qriocity, and is therefore not stored anywhere in our system.

Q: What steps should I take at this point to help protect my personal data?
A: For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well. To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports.

Q: What if I don’t know which credit card I’ve got attached to my PlayStation Network account?
A: If you’ve added funds to your PlayStation Network wallet in the past, you should have received a confirmation email from “DoNotReply@ac.playstation.net” at the email address associated with your account. This email would have been sent to you immediately after you added the funds, and will contain the first 4 digits and last 4 digits of your credit card number. You can also check your previous credit card statements to determine which card was attached to your PlayStation Network or Qriocity accounts.

Q: When or how can I change my PlayStation Network password?
A: We are working on a new system software update that will require all users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. We will provide more details about the new update shortly.

Q: Have all PlayStation Network and Qriocity users been notified of the situation?
A: In addition to alerting the media and posting information about it on this blog, we have also been sending emails directly to all 77 million registered accounts. It takes a bit of time to send that many emails, and recognize that not every email will still be active, but this process has been underway since yesterday. At this time, the majority of emails have been sent and we anticipate that all registered accounts will have received notifications by April 28th. Consumers may also visit www.us.playstation.com/support and www.qriocity.com for notices regarding this issue. In addition, we have taken steps to disseminate information regarding this issue to media outlets so that consumers are informed.

Q: What steps is Sony taking to protect my personal data in the future?
A: We’ve taken several immediate steps to add protections for your personal data. First, we temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and, second, we are enhancing security and strengthening our network infrastructure. Moving forward, we are initiating several measures that will significantly enhance all aspects of PlayStation Network’s security and your personal data, including moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location, which is already underway. We will provide additional information on these measures shortly.

Q: Has Sony identified the party or parties responsible for the PlayStation Network hack and subsequent theft of personal information?
A: We are currently conducting a thorough investigation of the situation and are working closely with a recognized technology security firm and law enforcement in order to find those responsible for this criminal act no matter where in the world they might be located.

Q: When will the PlayStation Network and Qriocity be back online?
A: Our employees have been working day and night to restore operations as quickly as possible, and we expect to have some services up and running within a week from yesterday. However, we want to be very clear that we will only restore operations when we are confident that the network is secure.

Since I'm clueless about such matters, if you're gonna go to the trouble of encrypting CC details, why not the other data? More hassle than it's worth for the company? :?

Q&A #1 for PlayStation Network and Qriocity Services

+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

First off, we want to again thank you for your patience. We know that the PlayStation Network and Qriocity has been frustrating for you. We know you are upset, and frankly as you’ve bought the console we have your money and your not going to buy that xbox360 now are you, not after boring your friends to death over why its so much worse than the PS3. so we are taking steps to make our services safer and more secure than ever before .honest we are!. We sincerely regret any lack of spending on stuff from PSN that has been caused, and rest assured that we’re going to get the services back online as quickly as we can.

We received a number of questions and comments yesterday and early today relating to the criminal intrusion into our network. We’d like to ignore most of the pertinant questions today.

We are also going to continue to post updates to this blog with any additional information and insight that we can over the next few days, just to make it look like we are doing stuff.

We are reading your comments. We are listening to your suggestions, well not that one to do with the rectal intrusion. Please keep them coming.

Thank you.

Q: Are you working with law enforcement on this matter?
A: Yes,,we are currently working with Inspector Clouseau on this matter as well as a recognized technology security firm HBGARY to conduct a complete investigation. This malicious attack against our system is a criminal act and we are proceeding aggressively to find those responsible and lay the smackdown on their pony asses.

Q: Was my personal data encrypted?
A: All of the data was protected by the umbrella corporation. The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no clue that credit card data was taken (it probably was, so watch out for those odd transaction to appear). The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted (because we just couldn’t be arsed, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system, honest would we lie to you!.

Q: Was my credit card data taken?
A: yup.

Q: What steps should I take at this point to help protect my personal data?
A: Nothing your doomed!!!! MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

Q: What if I don’t know which credit card I’ve got attached to my PlayStation Network account?
A: your a bit of a f*ckwit then aren’t you. You should buy another PS3, heck buy three and then claim it was someone else. You have the perfect excuse now we have lost all your data.

Q: When or how can I change my PlayStation Network password?
A: When we get it back up and running.. so next week, month. Your guess is as good as ours.

Q: Have all PlayStation Network and Qriocity users been notified of the situation?
A: Nope and frankly we couldn’t care less. But we will make a token effort.

Q: What steps is Sony taking to protect my personal data in the future?
A: we put it in a separate filing cabinet surrounded by ninjas and pirates and can only be accessed on the third tuesday after easter.

Q: Has Sony identified the party or parties responsible for the PlayStation Network hack and subsequent theft of personal information?
A: Nope.

Q: When will the PlayStation Network and Qriocity be back online?
A: err soon. Honest guv.

Sounds about right

Wish I'd seen this back in February:

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011 ... curity.ars

I've considered and mentioned it before but I've never been more certain now, the PS3 will be the last console I own. The two companies I'd even consider buying such products from (Microsoft and Sony) now seem to be run by people I wouldn't p1ss on if they were on fire :(
