I think the "burial" is meant to be within 24 hours. I think the sea thing is to stop shrine building. I've also heard nobody wanted the remains.

Apparently, they had a DNA sample from Bin Laden's sister, who died in the US. Not quite sure how they obtained that but anyway. If all you care is 'is this person related to that person' it's a pretty straightforward test - you could practically do it in situ. You could certainly do it in the medical centre in a modern warship. If he looked like Osama (I think 6'5" tall arabian men are fairly rare, for example) and the DNA match says he's related to Osama's sister, either he has a really unlucky twin brother or they got the right bloke.

I was under the impression that a test took 3-4 days and couldn't find anything else to suggest otherwise when i looked earlier. However I've just found this article that suggests results within an hour.
