'Let us celebrate and... aw Christ, Mugabe actually turned up!'

He is not welcome many places so uses any excuse to party.

Apparently everything was going well for Mugabe until he met the Pope. At that point he was rather put out that he was supposed to bow down and kiss his ring - he thought it would be the other way around

Pah. It's nothing more than a popularity contest.
They've scrapped all the rules about how long it takes as he was so popular and the church needs an image boost.
It's just like "best film ever" polls. Recent films do best, but as they get older only the truely good ones stand out.
The Vatican seems to be trying to take advantage of a similar effect.

Its bollocks frankly. I had a catholic upbringing so I know the 'rules' about how and why people are supposed to be made saints. He doesn't fit the bill. At all. The 'miracle' is is supposed to have performed seems spurious at best - he met someone, they felt a bit better for a while, then got ill again - nor has he gone though several stages of examination that should lead to where he is now. Aside from the obvious point that sainthood technically requires two related miracles - even the Catholic church accepts the possibility that one miracle might actually be a coincidence...
His 'sainthood' has no more validity than the array of medals on the chest of a mad dictator's military uniform. It's an utter joke and I suspect most catholics know it to be.

He covered up all the paedophile cases within the Catholic church for so long. Now that must be a miracle? ;)

And/or he didn’t know about it. That makes the two you’d need.

Didn't the rules allow for someone to become a Saint because he smelt fish?
