Well the mess was really caused by the banks. Admittedly bank regulation was not up to scratch but the Tory policy on bank regulation was just as lax.

Amazing that people will blame Labour yet Ireland are in a bigger mess yet they did not follow Gordons plans.

It's the bollox they try to pass off. Labour was the entire fault of the economic collapse and yet in the next breath the Tories say that the world is having problems and hence that's why we have low growth. Oh and the old chestnut of us nearly being like Greece. FFS the economics are completely different, be it from the types of loans we have to the fact that we have our own currency which is the most powerful tool we can have in dealing with the economic crisis. Gobsh!tes everywhere.

I agree totally but we will have another recession this time as a result of deliberate Coalition policy, and absolutely nothing to do with Labour. The deficit was caused by a collapse in tax revenues not by overspending. Though that is irrelevant when you are an idealogue.

I was more referring to their constant borrowing during the good times, which meant there wasn't much left to borrow now (when it's needed) without crippling the country with debt. But yes, they had a decade to fix the lax regulation too.

I think we can conclude that we have yet to find any party that can be responsible with our money or responsible with regulating those speculating on all sorts of markets, be they insurance or food stuffs. I really should avoid the News thread, especially as I'm a moody bugger.

Well government borrowing is not like household borrowing so while everyone thinks in those terms the economy is doomed. I was critical of Gordons spending during the boom. The problem is that the electorate would probably vote out a government that cut growth during a boom. The opposition would simply offer to keep spending, or cut taxes. As for regulations the consensus was for more deregulation. Look at the coalition, they have had a bonfire of the quangos and are planning to slash a large swathe of regulations, they also never criticised the Labour deregulation, except for not going far enough.
