*according to PC Pro

Full review here

After every new phone is billed the next "iPhone killer" it was only a matter of time before a phone was released that could live up to the hype. According to PC Pro that phone has arrived in the form of the Samsung Galaxy S II

Their conclusion states...

Quote:
Its power is unrivalled, its 4.3in is wonderfully bright and colourful, call quality is great and the camera is simply superb. The only concern we have is over battery life, but with everything else so good, a small hit in terms of stamina is the least of our worries. Even the price is reasonable: you can get one free on a £29 per month contract, a price that undercuts the best you can currently swing an iPhone 4 for – £69 and then £30 per month.

In short, the Samsung Galaxy S II is good enough to elbow the iPhone 4 roughly aside and grab the crown of the best smartphone on the planet. We’d encourage anyone who’s currently upgrading to push it straight to the top of their shortlist.

Although for me this bit rang alarm bells....

Quote:
What Samsung hasn’t done is improve the build quality much, or at least the impression of it. The previous Galaxy S felt a little too cheap for a flagship phone, and our opinion hasn’t changed this time around. The Galaxy S II’s textured rear panel is made of wafer thin, flimsy plastic and the chassis, aside from the glass front, is plastic too. If you want a phone that feels a million dollars, as well as looking it, the Galaxy S II isn’t for you.

That aside it's a glowing review that puts the phone straight to the top of the pile.

So it’s cheap, plastic and has crap battery life. Must be a winner.

I really don't get the need to be the next Anything Killer. Technology items can co-exist alongside each other. There's no reason that one has to kill off another. So one model gets superseded by another. It'll not be long before that model gets seemingly surpassed by the next.

I know you don't do predictions but you might be onto something here:
Samsung Galaxy S II hits 3 million pre-orders

Quote:
This is significantly higher than the number of pre-orders that Apple took in the week leading up to the launch of its Iphone 4, which totalled 600,000. Apple's latest smartphone sold 1.7 million over its first weekend on sale.

Having a Galaxy S myself I would say it's better than an iPhone 4

The back is plasticy however I have had mine nearly a year and there are barely any marks on it at all, the same can't be said of anyone's iPhone 4 at work (5 of them) due to them all being super protective and getting cases which allow in little bits of dirt

The front has never scratched being Gorillaglass, the plastic 'chrome' is a bit cheap bit it means the phone is light, without the bum on it it's thinner than an iPhone 4 from memory

upgraded the memory to 32gb which was oh so difficult (£20 for a 16gb microsd card) and I can do everything the iPhone 4 can and more (including Airplay to the Apple TV device we have at work)

I'll also be able to use the new google music service when it goes live... I have flash :P

Battery life is pretty good and looking forward to getting 2.3 on it

Just a shame it's harder to get proper fitted accessories like a satnav holder without ordering one from the USA (did that for the desk dock)

Mine was also free on a £27/month 18 month contract.... whereas I know the iphones are generally 24 months at £35+ for the basic one

It's not about killing off. No one suggeted the iPhone will now vanish into obscurity.

In any market a product can be seen as the best in that segment. For the majority the iPhone is that device in the smartphone market. Because of that it is only natural that a rival will want to make a device that is seen to better the market leader. The "kill" bit comes from media hype presumably but the resaons behind it exist.

This is all hardly surprising as the "4" is now nearly 12 months old. The "5" will probably be here in a couple of months. I would stake a few quid that it will be a galaxy s II "killer" according to the press.

Technology moves on. That's a good thing in my opinion.

I doubt the 4s will arrive soon, let alone the 5 as they have only just gotten the white one out

Do we even know if it will be a 4S?

I'll be pretty surprised if there isn't a 'next gen' iphone out this summer - white "4" or not ..

I'm expecting 4S rather than 5. Probably an upgrade on CPU and some minor tweaks.
