It does seem that some councils have much easier schemes than others. I really like the two bins for compost and general waste / bags for recycling although I'd be worried that the bags would blow away. We have two great big bins and two recycling boxes which takes up a lot of space, and the boxes aren't always big enough.

If they are planning to compost it then you should not be putting cooked food into it. Cooked food waste is not the easiest to get rid of. Though if people only cooked what they ate and so there was no food waste then it would also solve the problem.

I thought they meant things like potato peelings etc.. Some cooked food is OK, but anything heavily salted and also meat could be an issue.

It's not a problem that occurred to me, because wasting prepared food is simply not something that has ever been permitted in my life. As a child, not eating the food lovingly prepared by my mother slaving in the kitchen all day was totally unthinkable. These days, I can't afford to just throw away all that time and money. There's no such thing as "unwanted leftovers" in my house; there is simply "tomorrows dinner"

Same here. In fact the amount of organic waste in my house is very minimal. I was looking at getting a wormery for what little waste their is. The problem is that onions are not allowed as the worms hate onions, and onions are a regular in my house.

Like you I never tolerate waste food so it does not happen. It becomes leftovers for tomorrow. Maybe we as a nation need to rediscover that?

"leftovers" are very much a part of weekly food plan. I'll cook loads on Saturday because I have plenty of time, and what isn't eaten on the day becomes the basis of quick and easy meals for the rest of the week.

I think part of the problem is that in this country, the true price of things is distorted. UK labour rates are massively higher than the world average, so goods made with imported labour seem inexpensive. Our farmers are always struggling to make a living, while I can buy a Chinese router for the same price as a dozen eggs. Elsewhere in the world, the router would be unaffordable but the eggs would be normal fair. If the UK average wage was nearer 10p than £10 then things would be different. For one thing, we'd be able to compete in the world manufacturing market again...

^ Indeed.

I still find it hard to believe that alot of it isn't media spin, I mean surely people can't waste that much can they? Mind you, thinking about it, some waste bins around here can be overflowing just after one week. Even if you factored up our waste to a family of four it would still take over a month before our bin was that full, and that's being conservative.

The recycling bin and compost, well that's a different matter.

jonbwfc I was behind her in a queue today - but I wouldn't describe it as 'bushy'.
