THE Treasury is considering plans to privatise its holdings in RBS and Lloyds by distributing their shares among all of the UK’s 45m taxpayers, City A.M. has learned.

Under the scheme, put together by Portman Capital for the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) and led by CPS chair Lord Saatchi, the government’s 41 per cent Lloyds stake and 83 per cent RBS stake would be divvied up among taxpayers, who would have to pay back a “floor price” for the shares only when they resold them

I don't want the paper shares. I expect the government to hold them in trust for me.

If they sell them later, I expect any profits to be paid into the Exchequer for the good of all.

Cool, we all get to be shareholders, the bailed out banks suddenly tank and we all get a bill. ;)

I suspect that it will be worse than that. RBS is on the hook for £46 billion in Ireland. That could be worthless, and once Ireland defaults the losses will probably take down both banks. Unless the government bail them out again, with the idea of selling it to us again.

+1 The paperwork of giving all those free shares will be expensive, and we have to pay for that as well.
