Unlike some I have no moral objection to having nukes.... I just don't think we can afford them. That's billions of pounds that could be spent on other things, even within the navy. Harriers for our carriers, the next generation of frigates (due in service in about 10 years) for fighting drug shipments and pirates, attack subs etc. Or (of course) we could just not spend that money at all and save a bit of national debt.

I am sure that the navy would prefer all those things and the bill is estimated to be £25 billion but that is before all the other hidden costs. So £100 billion down the drain over the life of the project, if not more.

The cheapest design option would just be to stretch an Astute class sub and bang the missile compartment in the middle of it.
Bet you they don't though.

Well the SNP dont want Nuclear subs in scotland, so they get want they want and by extension the voters of Scotland who gave them the mandate get what they want. Close down the base (and all other MOD bases) and move the attack subs to devonmouth.
Give scotland the Oil/Gas fields which are in Scottish terratorial waters and a full share of the national debt and everyone is happy ;)

Expensive waste of money if you ask me. Multi-billion pound project to keep certain kinds of Tory moist in their underpants.

I'm quite pro the old military might of the old empire and having the best armed forces and all that [LIFTED], but I do think trident sounds like an utter waste of money.

I don't have an issue either with having major weaponry, the thing is is it really fit for any purpose nowadays?

It has never been used and is highly unlikely to be used. Where as the carriers will need aircraft and we could do better in terms of procurement and still save money for cutting the deficit.

Reminds me of that Fry and Laurie sketch about senior back benchers only being able to reach climax when a member of the SAS was present.

We don't own the missiles anyway, do we? I thought they were leased from the US, and the special relationship meant we couldn't actually light the blue touch paper without their say-so.

Still, we don't need libraries and schools and caring for the elderly.
