Won't you have to wait for your carrier to test/tinker/bastardise it before your phone gets the update?

Yes they will and a little bit of Google research delivered info of a Vodafone update of 2.3 to the Desire HD but no mention of the standard Desire. HTC have quoted the standard Desire as compatible but no Vodafone info as yet.

Maybe you could give cyanogenmod a go while you're waiting. It is based on Android 2.3.3

A colleague bought a Desire S last week, with 2.2 on it. He updated it to 2.3 himself, couldn't be bothered waiting for his provider to get around to releasing it.

My HD updated itself today. So far, it does seem faster and there's a couple of obvious improvements to the default apps. Not really had much of a play with it yet though!

I'm not seeing a massive change. A few minor graphical changes are obvious but all the main functions as far as I can tell have remained the same.

I was just about to post this. It's a pity to be sure. However IMO HTC deserve perhaps a little kudos for being forthright about the memory issue.

So does the HD have more memory then? I had no idea that 2.3 was going to use more of it

Well my Nexus S never showed, so I got a refund and a HTC Desire S instead. It came with 2.3.3 installed, and so far I'm liking it. Apparently it features much superior power and RAM management to 2.2, and I've definitely noticed an improvement in battery life.
I'm not sure how phones with 4"+ screens fare, I wouldn't be surprised if some don't make it through a full day.

I could squeeze two days but I tend to charge it when I go to bed anyway

Shame the Desire isn’t getting Gingerbread, was hoping it would improve battery life. I can understand the phone memory issue as I’m already on the limit with a lot of apps not wanting to go over to the SD card which is annoying. May be they should have design GB to run of the phone memory and but load all apps onto the SD.
