I was going to say "you wouldn't do that to a dog", but reading the story he claims to have "inexplicably forgotten".

How the hell do you "forget" your own kid? I can only assume his pregnant wife is leaving him seriously sleep-deprived and in no state to be driving a car in the first place. Or he's not telling the truth.

its very easy to forget
years ago when my eldest was about 5 i went to the supermarket
i had to go back to pick her up as i forgotten her

sadly to my shame this happened

sometimes you have so much on your mind you forget the basics ...
