Exactly. It was always assumed when two people were married they became as one, rather than two totally independent beings.

Besides, referring the "the other half" or the "better half" is usually meant jokingly. Don't take it so seriously.

Just watched Panarama's undercover report into "Care" homes, using secret filming. I can't tell you how angry I am at this moment, these are some seriously ill and vulnerable people and the acts of abuse I watched brought me to tears. [LIFTED] bastards, the people filmed should be locked up, but I suspect they'll just lose their jobs, or get suspended on full pay.

Genuinely difficult viewing, but I applaud the reporter for his courage in bringing this footage to the authorities.

From a medical point of view, I've been to a few nursing and residential homes along with the senior GP. Some of them look very fancy/expensive and charge feck loads but the care is abysmal. Nurses are struggling because they are understaffed and the pressure is immense - one innocent mistake and they are fired. I've already decided that if I get to the point where I need to be in a nursing/residential home, I'm going to ask my family to shoot me. At least I'd die with a little dignity.

Yep, no denying it's a difficult job, that's for sure. But how the hell these people got into those jobs is a disgrace in itself. One particularly nasty little tw@ knelt on this poor girl's neck to restrain her, potentially nearly killing here. I just couldn't believe what I was watching. The staff nurse in charge was just watching it and at one stage stood laughing as the same girl was continually drenched with ice cold water, then had a fan held in front of her to make her even colder, she was shivering as they all laughed at her - the abuse lasted all that day.

The physical abuse, though, was really hard to watch, especially when the parents of the girl watched the footage, that's what really got to me. They had no idea that this was going on.

Will catch up with that Panorama programme later, though it sounds grim. I think a major problem with residential care homes is the fact that the pay for the nursing staff is terribly low....fractionally above the minimum wage at the one I know and that's a BUPA home (residential home for the elderly) and one of the better ones. What kind of staff can they hope to attract? My other half's father is in the BUPA home and it costs a fortune for anyone to be an inmate there but luckily the staff are great. When you consider what they have to do just in terms of cleaning up their elderly folk - many of whom are rendered completely incapable of looking after themselves - it's a scandal.

There are many factors that go against decent care. One is property values. It can cost a small fortune for a plot that can have a care home that can provide enough beds. Then add in finance charges and regulations because of previous care scandals and you get a very high fixed cost base. So with the market price that they can charge so low in comparison private homes rely on minimum wage jobs to have any chance of breaking even. With council operated homes closing to sell the land the costs of the industry will climb. Far too much short termism in government policym so that long term care is sacrificed for tax cuts for the rich.

Add in the fact that the homes are probably seriously understaffed so stress levels of staff sky rockets you can see why there is so much abuse.

And the other person "completes" or compliments you, making that single entity.

It means that you have found your life partner (whether married or not) and that they have made you a complete entity, the couple, which is that what the race memory drives people to do, to find a partner and carry on their line.
