It does not worry me so much but I am very aware of problems in some countries like Dubai and Saudi Arabia. Dubia has imprisoned people for eating a seeded bun. The seeds were poppy seed and even though they were not narcotic because you would need billions of seeds to get slightly high and they convicted on the basis of single seeds being found in trouser turn-ups.

On ðe oðer hand, Britain has arrested and detained people for walking down a paþ and shouting out at a conference of ðe governing party. Add in to ðat the various stories of conviction people based on ðe testimony of one very biased doctor.

Perhaps we should remove ðe plank from our own eye first?

I am not saying that we are perfect. In fact there are far more cases than you mention. Only yesterday it seems our Crown Prosecution Service withheld evidence from protestors lawyers that would have acquited them, and that they are now languishing in gaol as a result.

I didn't start this thread to say 'oh look how bad they are' or 'oh look how good we are', it was more a call out for women to be aware seeing as the Australian Embassy failed to let the poor woman know that aside from being a victim she could also face imprisonment.

However, seeing as we've diverted onto that topic I wonder when does it become an issue of basic human rights over one of a country's specific laws?

Tricky one that.

One of many reasons why I never intend to go to an Arab country.

What made me mistrust these countries most is the people I've met from them. The worst was a Egyptian I worked with. The most ignorant sexist piece of [LIFTED] I've ever had the misfortune to meet.

S'ok mate. :D

True, our system has many, many problems. One of the main ones at the moment is shutting down the forensics unit and letting private companies tender for contracts and/or police departments perform DNA analysis in-house for criminal cases. Justice has been sold to the lowest bidder, soon it will be 'this murder investigation has been brought to you by npower....'.

We can't generalise either, take Iran for example, I'm sure many parts may have similarities to other nations in the region (perhaps not) and yet in Tehran women hold jobs such as police officers and taxi drivers.

As with most things, it's never black and white.
