Got renewal for car from Insurance company A. Let's say £850. To protect NCB brings it up to £950. Excess is £300.
Ring around and car insurance company B can do it for £800. But excess is £500.

Company A want evidence of quote from B so they can take it to the underwriters and see if they can beat it.
Company B don't want to provide evidence.

What do I do?

Company B will charge nothing for mods except power ones. So big alloys is fine but new intake will cost £££.
Company A charge £20 for admin each time but are happy for you to declare mods in one lump to save £.

Can't you get company B to provide the quote in writing or by e-mail? If they won't provide a written quotation I'd be a bit paranoid about trusting them in the first place.

First things first (as opposed to second or third)...

Have you done everything you can to lower your quote?

I found that adding my stepmum as a named driver on the policy lowered the quote by around 20-25%.

Are there any older women that you know (i.e. your mum) who you can stick on the policy?

They never have to drive the car or anything but it will lower your quote.

GIve that a try. You will also find that some companies will give you more off for doing this so you may not want to stick with Company A and decide to move to Company C instead.

I'll say this.

Call Brentacre (unless they're one of the companies, and if they were, I could understand their position). Speak to John or Chris and tell them that your a member on 38, MKIVs, and/or wherever else and tell them that if they can beat either A or B, you'll sign up on the spot. They don't charge admin fees for changes, they don't charge for mods except PS increase and they are jolly nice helpful chaps.

It's a modified car, so specialist insurance. Adding drivers increases the premium, rather than reducing it. Leaving it standard and the likes of directline etc want £2000+. With specialist insurers, the quotes are around half that.

Brentacre - spoke to a chap called John and he was awesome. When I rang up to get a written quote, it was a chap called Craig and he was a complete PITA. Sounded like a jobsworth but one encounter isn't enough.

I went back to the original company and they quoted the same. They went to the same underwriter as brentacre and got the same cover for the same price.

Are you on anyone of the aforementioned forums? Try Sky Insurance. They do discount for membership and were actually cheaper than Brentacre this year, which shocked me. However, in the past, I've paid £30 more to go with John because he is sound as a pound, works hard for his sales and they know their stuff there. And those are the kind of people you want to deal with in the event of a claim.

Its sorted now. I told my current insurers who brentacre were using as underwriters and my company has matched brentacre's quote.

I have heard good things about Brentacre elsewhere (VW T5 modding forum). So its good your broker could match their quote.

Interesting! I went with them last year for the first time, because they beat Brentacre by £50. But the service wasn't as good and the policy isn't as favourable in the specifics. Now that I'm over here, it's not that much of an issue, but when it comes to renewal, I will be calling John first.
