It’s a Daily Mail article too. They should look at their right hand side bar before publishing such stories. They are hardly contributing to the solution to the problem. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... itted.html

Classic. That right hand bar on the mail site is worse than one of those celeb blog sites.

There was just as much celebrity adulation in the past. How many celebs today could get a million people to their funeral like Rudoplh Valentino did? None. You only have to see the crowds that went to see Laurel and Hsrdy when they toured the UK. I think that this is a smokescreen. It might be down to many factors. Celebrity culture is nothing new.

I'd say there was a fair difference. The people you mention were all extremely talented and good at what they did. A significant proportion of celebs today have very little talent at all, and are kept in the public eye by a mix of marketing and the release of gossip news.

Yes but there was also marketing of their stars by the studio from the start of Holloywood. Also are you saying that there will be hundreds of thousands going to the funerals of Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp or any other great actor?

There'll probably be millions at the funeral of Margaret Thatcher. You know, just to make sure.

Make sure they get a chance to jump up and down on her grave? Aye, best book my ticket now, milk thief.

I suspect that many might see it as an opportunity to throw eggs at her coffin. Most people will not remember her well. The Queen however could have millions at her funeral. No one else in this country will come anywhere close to that.

Liking celebrities is one thing but there are whole armies of women who could tell you who's going out with who to an almost degree level but have no chance of career progression because they'd rather rather read that crap than consider studying for their own job or future careers they'd like to move in to. It's the whole career vs "job that pays the bills" thing

Okay I would say that gossip mags ghave replaced the old over the fence gossip now. Since Thatcher replace community with a me society, we now replace what we would have done with neighbours with a magazine. As for career progression that is a red herring. Career progression has been curtailed over the last thirty years. As for a "it pays the bills" job, I suspect that applies to a lot of men as well.
